Pokemon recompilation project gen1recomp adds FireRed and LeafGreen to its list of supported games

After adding support for Pokemon Crystal last month, the gen1recomp team are back again with the first third generation entries. Arriving amidst recent updates, both FireRed and LeafGreen are now playable through the lua-based application. At the time of writing, the game seems pretty ordinary, but if mods for the first and second generation are anything to go by, this could soon become the best way to play these games.

As with the other games in this project, you are required to supply a compatible ROM to be able to extract assets from. The latest version, v0.3.0, is available to download across Android, iOS, Switch, and a whole heap of other platforms. You can find the GitHub repo linked below.

Note for those interested that AI was used in this project as a tool to support development, with commits being reviewed by humans prior to being merged.

I appreciate the due diligence for disclosure on frontpage articles, at least.

I won't act like the headline-chasing, slapdash projects like this didn't happen in the past, but it's nice people can still sniff out a rushjob from afar. And telling when people get defensive of said rushjobs.

You mean, other than the decomp this project is based on, or the one they mentioned in the post you are replying to...?

I assume you calling it a decomp is just a mistake, normally I wouldn't bother to correct that but it is an important distinction if you're asking genuinely.

My only worry about the use of AI is the creator of the project not knowing what to fix or how to fix due to lack of coding knowledge or just not knowing how to interpret the code.
That being said, this project in my honest opinion, should have focused on getting all of Gen 1 especifically to run and fix all of the bugs BEFORE going to Gen 2 games or even Leaf Green (Gen 3).

It’s my general hope that people on here seeing good projects thatve made use of it as a tool will just get used to it to some extent. Or at the very least diminish the idea that every app that’s used AI is “slop”. But we’ll see.

I dont care what it is.it works and that what important.new update gave us save modding in a way ive never seen.so im pretty happy.As for dev not using AI,i'll let my kids wait for their release.Like someone earlier said,life is short and we dont have that much time.

Eh, I wouldn't go that far. Gen 6 and 7 are still 3D games, basic ones by modern standards sure, but "recompiling" also means you lose a lot of the optimisations that could have been made for their consules.
I mean, these GBA recomps have performance settings. For Game Boy Advance games. Their CPUs ran in megahertz.
 
you guys are really understimating the power of these new AI LLMs.the other day a real Dev ported a game in few hours.The speed at which a skeleton for a recomp project can be put on track.Youre right i mistook the port as a recomp effort,they are very different.but that reverse engineering is gonna be soon AI driven,i give it max 2 years.Assembly is no joke.
The most awesome thing is that alot of special arcade hardware is being ported everywhere.its truly the best time to be a player.

Aww, boohoo. We aren't going anywhere. You're tired of people complaining about A.I. usage? Maybe educate yourself on how damaging A.I. is for the environment and this community as a whole. Datacenters leave a massive impact on local environments, drain resources and deplete water supplies. Move next to a data center and I'd love to see you hold the same attitude. Life is short yes, but I can wait however long for a proper decomp/recomp because emulation already exists.

I'm aware of all this.
I never said I love that people use AI or that it's there in general.
I just said: It's there and people will use it.
Nothing can be done about it. It's a fact, it's the truth.
It's the mightiest digital tool ever and I probably don't need to tell you we're living in the digital age.

Governments are the only entities that could ban AI.
But they won’t. No country would voluntarily—or out of goodwill toward the planet—allow itself to suffer such an economic setback.
So it’s like bicycles and cars: Bicycles are better for the environment, your wallet, and your health. Yet people use cars because you can’t just hop on a bike and ride hundreds of kilometers to the next town with a lot of luggage.
You can get worked up about cars from morning till night, but plenty of people will still use them.
The same thing is happening with AI.
And precisely because I’ve come to terms with that fact, I’ve also realized that getting worked up about it accomplishes NOTHING.
I agree with people; I understand their arguments, but it just doesn’t accomplish anything. And as a result, it’s annoying to have to read the same old drivel over and over again.

Deal with it. Has nothing to do with education. Thus there's no need to get that personal.
 
If life is so short then it should’ve been a problem that decomps took “so long” years ago. Suddenly now devtime is a problem that "you'd be stupid NOT to use AI to solve" to people (who probably already have ROM, let alone game libraries in the hundreds).

People said the same thing about crypto & NFTs. People in power want us apathetic & submissive. It only goes as far as we let them. It's odd how the tech is simultaneously "in its infancy" but also "here to stay, like it or not. Nothing we can do now".

Also strange how some of this was spurred by a reply saying "at least it was reviewed by humans". Like when someone just brings up "hey this was majority auto-coded", people's eyes squint into a cold glare like they're thinking ...are they judging me?!"
