I have a launch Switch and I'm having an issue where everytime my son plays the switch will turn off mid gameplay, if I boot straight back up it doesn't happen again in that session. I'm guessing it's due to overheating so my plan is to replace the thermal paste, I have some mx4 paste laying around, will this do the job alone or do I need pads etc?

Thermal pads usually last much longer so the immediate concern would really only be the paste itself.

Also yes, the MX4 will be just fine as it's nonconductive and technically overkill for the thing.

Doesn't sound like it's overheating. If it's overheating you'll see a message and it will enter sleep mode, instead of shutting down completely. Anyway giving it a cleanup and repaste doesn't hurt, if the problem persists then it's probably a hardware issue.

I would echo that as well, to be honest... that you can just power it straight back on and play without it shutting back down, if it were overheating you wouldn't be able to do that.

Agreed, but short of tracing components to find the problem that isn't a lot I can do other than fix the obvious, and some new paste never hurt anyone

I use MX4 in my Switch. It works really well! I even treated the copper pipes since I had extra over.
