Hardware Is it the same as a YLOD?

I just today picked up a (mostly) working ps3 for $6.99. Unfortunately, when I got home I found that all was not good. When I turn it on, it works fine for about 30 seconds, then shuts down with 3 beeps and a flashing red light. Is this the same as the YLOD?

I don't have that all. Just a red light flashing once every second or so

it's probably hardware failure of some sort, but yes, it's probably the same as ylod. I know that the 360 can get rrod or e74, which both refer to hardware failure. I guess you get what you pay for. that's not a bad price for a broken system (if you can get it running).

the problem you have now is how well the motherboard is doing. it could be damaged in some way.

It can boot up into the menu, but then it'll slow to a crawl, freeze, and then crash with the 3 beeps.

I'm fine with replacing parts if need be, I'd just prefer not to waste money on parts I don't need

I don't have a spare hdd to test with. All of my spares are 3.5 inch. I hoped someone would have had this issue before

how 'bout removing the hdd, then turning on the system? it should give an error about no system storage found. leave it on there for a few moments and see if the system crashes again.

yw. it might be a stretch, 'cause I think that would be one of the first things to try. I'm not all that well versed on the ps3 motherboard (360 phat only), but that's because you have to open that system to do any kind of mods. if it's still crashing, you might post a message in that thread.

Make sure its clean and vented properly. Sounds like overheating to me. Theres a fail safe that will shut the system down before the GPU becomes damaged. Usually followed by blinking red indicator.

there's an led sequence thing like the secondary error code on the 360, but virtually nothing is known about it beyond it indicating a problem.

Is there a safe way to open up the ps3? Or do I just unscrew it and hope for the best?

I'd watch a video of the system breakdown. it's possible that the motherboard is warped if it's overheating. I've seen that happen with the 360.
