Is it safe to update PS3 4.86 to current update?

I had my old PS3 with custom firmware and after 2 years of not using it is asking me for an update. All I want to know is if its safe to do from the console it self or can I do it some other way to make it "hack safe" like how you install the update on the Wii separately with a boot loader?

I do belive my current cusotm firmware is REBUG.

If you want to update, install a new CFW that is on the version you want (latest is 4.88) directly. I recommend you to install Evilnat's CFW, you can find it here on PSX-Place
