I've searched for this but can't find a proper answer, is it possible to use a gamecube controller to play Skyward Sword on a hacked Wii? Kinda like the patched DS roms of Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks that allow you to use Dpad and buttons but for Wii, I've seen it's possible with Dolphin emulator but dunno about the actual Wii

I'd imagine it'd be a pain to set up, especially on a real Wii. That doesn't answer your question, but anyway why do you want to anyway? I found the controls worked quite well as long as I just did a flick of the wrist.

Just out of interest and also to avoid having to get a Wiimote plus, unless there's also a way around that?

Lol, I haven't logged on in months and I just signed in and saw your comment. Yes its possible but not always a pleasant experience. Some stuff can be difficult, like controlling the remote airplane thingy. I actually made a custom controller profile a long time ago. Here is the link if you are interested:

Just an FYI, I heard Nintendo is releasing a new version of Skyward Sword for switch this year (that will have a normal controller setup).

Edit: Opps, just dawned on me you are talking about using a real wii to the play the game. My controller file is for the Dolphin Emulator.

The big input novelty in Skyward Sword is you can do all nine cuts - and you have to, to progress at various points in the game. That's not going to be easy to pull off with a Gamecube controller absent a major rom hack (and even then). @Gorkensnorkel evidently mapped the sword to four buttons to start to capture what Nintendo did with the Wiimote here.

Zelda uses a lot of buttons already, so major sacrifices are going to have to happen to fit something like that on a Gamecube controller.

On a real Wii, heck no. On Dolphin, this mapping may actually do something for you. I came up with it just now and may end up testing it in a little bit.

Use the C Stick for each of the eight cuts (WiiMote), map Z to thrust (WiiMote thrust), use A for dash, R for shield, left stick for movement, L to pull up the items screen, X+Y for Spin Slash (X for Nunchuck ,Y for Wiimote), D-Pad for items and Fi (yuck), Start for pause, and that should pretty much be it.

There's a reason right thumbstick sword controls are not popular among developers. Especially a nubby one like the Gamecube's. Buttons sound more awkward but it's probably what you would have to do to achieve sufficient input accuracy.
