I wanted to play my retail Pokemon cart online today, but I can't get online. I've downloaded the latest update .cia and installed it to SysNAND, but when I go to play online, it tells me a new update is needed. The update appears to be installed correctly, as I'm no longer prompted to update before launching. How can I play online with retail carts that need an update?

I've updated using Super Smash Bro's that wanted 9.2. I wouldn't go any higher than that. The game said what version it would update me to. Do not download any updates. It should only come from the game cart and tell you what update you will be getting.

I don't want to update my SysNAND; I want to apply an update to my Pokemon game to allow for online play.

You need your nands linked. Then go to the eshop on your emunand and download the update, so your 3ds has the valid ticket. The update should now work in sysnand.

No, updates and dlc will not show up on your dash, only games/apps will. Installing cia's in sysnand will install the game, update, or dlc, whatever it is for, but your system will see them as invalid due to you not obtaining them off the eshop or being in gateway mode. Getting them off the eshop also installs a file to your sysnand that validates you owning it. Gateway mode bypasses that check.

Non legits cias don't work in sysNAND, unless you're in gateway/mt-card/pbt/pasta mode.
You should have just use the eshop spoof on your sysnand. But now even that won't work too, because installing the cia added a fake ticket to your sysnand, so the eshop download will fail, unless you restore the nand backup you made before installing it. (if you made one)

That is true for games, but since updates are free, you should be able to delete the update in devmenu and then download them from the eshop. It should also install the valid tickets then. I download all the updates off the eshop when I can, so I can't verify this.

Right, so a N3DS user with no Cubic Ninja to spoof firmware for eShop access is out of luck then? Guess I'll have to wait for the PastaCFW to get an MSET port to use their firmware spoofer.

I just asked somebody, and they verified that even updates can't be downloaded from the eshop if you install the cia version of them. That sucks!!!

If you have a gateway, you could always dump the game and play it that way.

Seeing as Pokemon is a Card2 game though, the saves get corrupted when dumped. I suppose when the MSET port for Pasta is out, I may be able to use SaveDataFiler to extract the save from my cart that way.
