DSpico - An open-source flashcart for the DS(i)

Over the past four years, we - the LNH team - have been working hard on a project that some of you guys may have already heard about: an open-source flashcart that supports the DS, DSi and 3DS (in DSi mode), by the name of DSpico.


The project evolved from a simple flashcart, to a collection of individual components that work together. Each component has been separated in their own repositories, and can be modified to your liking. Each repository comes with their own README's and documentation.The DSpico project consists of the following components:
  • DSpico Hardware - The hardware of the DSpico.
  • DSpico Firmware - The firmware for the DSpico.
  • DSpico Bootloader - Bootloader for the DSpico.
  • DSpico DLDI - The DLDI for the DSpico.
  • WRFUxxed exploit - Full-access DSi-mode exploit for WRFU Tester that can be used with DSpico.
  • Pico Launcher - Front-end for Pico Loader.
  • Pico Loader - DS(i) rom loader. Supports various flashcards, including the DSpico.
Guides to build your own DSpico, as well as instructions for compiling the software are also available. We tried to make the process as friendly as possible. An overview of the features can be found on the website, although each README has much more extensive documentation.

QUICK FAQ (will be updated over time)​

- Q: Why use micro-usb over usb-c ?
- A: When we were making the hardware, using USB-C introduced more components that simply didnt fit on the board. We also had concerns of the usb-c port fitting nicely in the cartridge port, and fragility concerns with the shell.

- Q: Where can I order one ?
- A: Your best shot is joining a group buy, or finding a store that manufactures DSpico. We (the LNH Team) will not sell any boards.

- Q: How is compatibility ?
- A: Most of the DS library, as well as homebrew, should work. We do not have an official compatibility list, and we are aware of a few titles that do not work correctly at the moment.

- Q: Does this plays 3ds executables ?
- A: No.

- Q: Am I forced to use Pico launcher ?
- A: No. For instance, Wood menu and TwilightMenu++ work just fine. And vice versa as well, pico launcher is usable on other flashcarts.

- Q: Can i use ntrboot with this ?
- A: Yes, you can perform ntrboot on both 3ds and DSi. We recommend powering the board via micro-usb for DSi ntrboot.

- Q: I need assistance. Where do i go ?
- A: Join the DSi hacking discord, there is a dedicated dspico channel where you can ask your questions.

I have added DSPico support to TwilightBoxart if people are looking for covers for their games & emulated games. You can run it from your DS/DSi directly if you want as a companion app. :)

This should basically cover any console the DS will ever run and this is probably my final version unless some new launcher will be released.

Good news: TwilightBoxart is back from the dead. :) The old server was shut down years ago, so I rebuilt the whole thing from scratch: new server, new apps, and way more consoles. Say hi to TwilightBoxart 2.0 with DS Pico support!

It still combines GameTDB and libretro + NoIntro DB to cover the full spectrum of consoles supported by TwilightMenu++, but games are now identified by what they contain (title id, game code, crc32, sha1), not what they are called. So a wrongly named ROM still gets the right cover, and .zip/.7z archives are scanned...

Why did gametdb block IPs from China? Or is the GFW blocking gametdb?
I remember I could access gametdb directly in 2023.

Has anyone tried Sanrax's emulation guide?
I'm having trouble with the NitroGrafx emulator, specifically with PC-Engine CD games.
At first, I had a 'can't find a settings.cfg' error, but I fixed it simply by using the 'Save settings' option within the emulator, which created the file.
However, I still cannot play CD games. When I select a game, the screen remains black, and nothing happens when I select the 'syscard3' BIOS. If I manually select the game from the CD-ROM, I get a 'File too large!' message.
Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

So, recently I got my DSPico in the mail and have been toying with it ever since. I am able to get the folder structure going, implement the emulators and add the roms and so on – but I completely fail at the point of flashing the 'WRFUxxed Firmware' onto the card itself.

Mine came with software on the SD card already installed. I am using a Dsi XL. It can boot and I can select and play DS Games, GB/Color games and GBA games, to some extend. But nothing more will work.

No Atari 2600/7800 etc., no NES, no SNES,... when I try to load one of those, the upper screen just turns white, while the lower one turns black and that's it then. I have to hold the power button and start the DSi anew, to get back in the menu.

I have read the steps of obtaining a 'WRFUxxed' Firmware several times, I downloaded far too many 'things', of which I don't even know what they are. I tried to patch this, patch that... flash this onto the DSPico, flash that onto the DSPico, but nothing seems to make those Atari/NES/SNES games work.

I mean, atm I kinda have a half working collection of roms. As mentioned, the DS roms work, the GB/Color ones work and some of the GBA are playable to some extend.

I surfed to so many websites, that I don't even remember where I got it from, but at some point, I obtained a file, which I could patch, using the firmware patcher website and it seemed to work.

I then flashed this *.uf2 file onto my Pico. First time it failed at 62%. When I tried it again, it worked. The Pico disconnected, as it said on the website, it would and I plugged it back in my Dsi, with the flash card. But still, only the aforementioned roms work.

Does anyone have any idea, what could be the problem here?

PS: although, as mentioned, my DSPico came with a folder structure already on it, I formatted it and started from scratch, following the points on the website, but still no luck, besides DS,GB,GBA.

hi, i think you have two separate problems and the firmware is not the one blocking your emulators.

in your first post the card boots on your DSi XL and DS, GB/GBC and GBA all work, only NES, SNES and Atari white screen. so the card was already fine on the DSi. WRFUxxed will not fix the emulators.

on the firmware, the reason you keep failing is not you. there is no ready made WRFUxxed uf2 anywhere, it cannot be distributed because the WRFU Tester rom has to be inside it. the guide has a patcher page instead, you give it your own copy and it gives you the finished uf2, no compiling:

also check what you have now. on a DSi, "WRFU Tester v0.60" on the bottom screen at boot means WRFUxxed. showing as "DSpico LNH Team" means Hybrid, and hybrid does not run on a stock DSi. i flashed mine for another reason and lost my non modded 3ds the same way, building it yourself gives hybrid unless you enable wrfuxxed on purpose.

on the emulators, easy to miss in the guide: SNEmulDS cannot be launched with argv. you have to open SNEmulDS.nds from the Emulators folder first and pick the rom inside. a .smc association will not work. same for jEnesisDS and NeoDS.

for NES and Atari, can you try launching the .nds directly instead of opening a rom? if it opens fine that way it is the association, if it white screens alone it is the emulator on DSi.

not DLDI by the way, the loader patches that itself. i only have a DS Lite here so i cannot test the DSi side, sorry.
