the internet says, for example: rom 4800 is either giant robots mutant insects or it's a run of the mill puzzle game ...

is this ... correct?

edit: or warioware diy?

It depends if the website maintaining the numbering is counting DS/DSi enhanced/DSi Exclusive in the same dat, or separate (so 3 possible numbering).
GBAtemp is numbering both DSi separately from DS releases.
Advanscene (offlinelist) is numbering them all in the same list.

There's no rules on the number, it's a method created by rom providers websites, not by the ROM dumper release teams, so games don't have official number to recognize them.

Some websites are also counting hardware dump (action replay, flashcard dump, etc.), so there's even more different possible number.

Why not try searching for ROMs by name instead? I know that may be a little old fashioned but it still works.

I'm a hoarder who wants everything, searching by name would be very difficult.

So when did the numbers go inconsistent? 3500+?

3922 is the first DSi enhanced release.
so most dat should have the same numbering up until 3921. (except if they count xxxx kiosk demo and hardware roms)

I quite like GBAtemp's rom numbering, it's the same numbering as my fav rom site so I just need to search for the rom number if I can't see it.
