Cheers. I'm wondering how long any of these sites will be available though as the new "cyberflashing" law is making the platform responsible rather than the offender.

TBH, I think at this point you basically need to look at a VPN as I won't be surprised to see more of this unless more countries implement similar 'Helen Lovejoy' laws.

I guess it's inevitable the way things are going, but I just don't like using them kinda like how I don't like paying for online gaming. The free ones won't give me my full gigabit either.

You don't need the full gigabit if you only use it for what you need. That being said... if I were you, I'd use it for most traffic anyway, given the dire situation in the country. Still, for the applications that are the heaviest on bandwidth (such as downloading games), you probably don't need to use it.

Edit:
The free ones
This is a massive mistake to make. You should avoid the vast majority of free VPNs at all costs, especially if you would rely on them for all your traffic... think of it as a midget who sits between your ISP and the site, and takes note of everything interesting that slips through the cracks. The companies that operate them profit off of your data, and giving access to ALL your traffic is a very foolish move to make.

This reminds me of the need to write to my MP over how fucking stupid this and others are. I actually spoke to him when Labour were in opposition and he told to wait till conference. I did and ended up cancelling my Labour membership of 13 years.

Avoid the free ones, one I recall relied on P2P which meant you could end up with an unreliable service, be part of a botnet, etc.

One trick I've found is to either wait for a sale or rely on cashback deals.

I know Vodafone has a discount on NordVPN right now through their rewards app and I've used Quidco in the past.

I tend to only use VPNs when I need them, although I am going to see if I can setup pfsense to automatically use a VPN for restricted URLs.

I do tend to download big files daily so I'd get annoyed constantly turning it on and off. So far, it hasn't been a big deal to not see a couple images here and there. I'm not bothered about regional locks for streaming or porn. I did notice today that a lot of people's sigs are suddenly a big blue box.

Is Nord generally the best (fastest) in the UK? I'd prefer to just set it and forget it if possible.

Just did a quick test on my desktop with a NY server, labelled fastest in the app.

NY: 79ms ping, 807down 93up
Without VPN: 8ms ping, 939 down, 109 up

That's pretty good. Does it sustain that sort of speed over large files or is it more of a burst?

He'll probably just call you a paedo. That's basically Labours line on this. You're with us or you're with Jimmy Savile.

I don't use nord, I do use proton (more connections and port forwarding if you want that), I have it on most of the time, speed hit is minimal for me. Test now to the same UK server. 940 up and down without vpn, with vpn 840 ish up and down. Can definitely sustain that as well on big files, not just a burst.

As for the topic, I use imgchest.com. Works basically the same as imgur, but often has anime tiddies on the front page.

Just an update, I managed to get the 'split VPN' working, but it seems Imgur doesn't like VPNs that much and ended up using a Canadian nordvpn server.

This is all rather stupid on Imgurs part. They were told by the ICO they had to start age verifing users in the UK in line with the new online safety laws that came into effect in July. MediaLab refused to do so and rather than get fined for not complying with the law they have banned everyone in the UK from using Imgur.

Why the hell they didn't just add ages verification is beyond me.

Name an age verification api which is safe, private and secure.

Nah, just cut us off, it's the right thing. More sites should start doing it, more normal sites that do it, less effective "it's a porn ban", "you're on the side of Jimmy Savile" and so on will be. Hopefully wikipedia is good to their threat and they are the next to do it, even the BBC won't be able to spin that one for the government as only effecting "adult content".
