The resolution is bigger, but not by a power of 2.

You can hold Select while booting a DS cart to make it not stretch.

I see. Why does the downscaling make it scale to smaller-than-DS Phat though? I think at the very least it could stretch it to just DS Lite size... which looked fine.

It's a choice between native resolution (on 3DS) and "pixel perfect".
