i think nintendo will put saome weird stuff in WII that it cannot be hacked : (Â

I think nobody can hack the Dreamcast. I heard Sega uses some king of GD-ROM for their media

I think nobody can hack the PSP. They use some UMD-discs and consumers don't have access to UMD-burners
frown.gif

I think nobody can hack the Gamecube. I heard a standard size CD or DVD won't even FIT in

I don't see how the Virtual Console won't be cracked so any ROM could be used.

that might be possible, but then again you wouldn't be able to use WiiConnect24 and play online games...
as soon as you're connecting to any of Nintendo's servers, they can check if you've got any pirated software on your internal memory or SD card

So? Don't store software on internal mem and take out the sd card when you play... as for pirated wii games... they'll figure out how to bypass the security.
As for wiiconnect 24: Only put the sd card in when your internet is unplugged.

Yes, when there's a will there's a way

Like Gaisuto says, some talented hacker may end up hacking the Wii so that you can run ISOs off the SD cards. You can go as high as 8GB with them now after all. Or maybe they'll go for a soldered chip and run off actual discs like the PS2.

I find it odd that no one has mentioned the two USB 2.0 ports on the back of the Wii. I would say that this is a more likely (or at least convinient) way to run disk images. If external harddrives can be read from those ports, then I can't imagine it taking much to get games booted from one.

lots of skeptics said that the 360 couldn't be hacked. Others still claim the same about the PSP. The first PSP-chips are already out, and 360 has been moddable for quite a while now. There are brilliant minds at work, finding ways to run their own code on these exiting new platforms, I have no doubt in my mind that they'll succeed.

You just made my day

I always thought the Wii will just be hacked to run burned images, like the GC. I never even considered the USB ports for external HDDs, even though I'm currently drooling over that USB HDD solution for the PS2.
Talk about "hidden in plain sight".
Talk about "it takes a genius to invent the bleeding obvious".

So, you, sir, rock, I, however, suck

The Wii tracks what has been loaded into it. Nintendo even keeps records of what VC games you buy so that in case your console or SD card is destroyed somehow they can send you back the VC games you bought. Also VC games are only playable from the console they were purchases for. Example: If you buy Super Mario on your Wii it won't work on your friends Wii.

Nintendo had all this stuff scouted and even if your Wii is off line the internal memory probably keeps trak of what disc have been played in the system. People who Pirate may have to avoid online connections completely. Hell, if I thought of this why wouldn't they?

Because on one hand, of data privacy, eventual issues with consummers associations. On the other hand, what can sound feasible, and easy, is perhaps hard to implement into a home system, possible issues of this tech can lead a lot of people to be banned from the online for wrong matters. They can't afford the risk to be have some bad press about anti piracy issues, it will be more costly than the eventual loss due to piracy.

I totally agree to that. Even if they could keep track of those records, it wouldn't be legal in every country. Here in Germany these measure would be highly doubtful and people wouldn't react to good on such a policy. In the days of the blogosphere, where even no facts can make news and rotten a reputation, a couple of pissed-off users would suffice to weaken Nintendos position.
I don't say the love piracy, but as said, in contradiction to MS, they earn money from the hardware itself, Nintendo doesn't depend on the Software sales. And the majority of customers isn't even aware of the pirating options, they fear loss of warranty or have a "bad feeling about it". The Grannys buy Mario 3k for their grand-children and thats how Nintendo sells their stuff. Ok, piracy hurts the small developers, but hey, who on the market today doesn't belong to a big publisher? The give a sh*t about the money they loose due to a bunch of nerds hacking their boxes.
To conclude: I would also say, that the Wii is hacked quite fast and Nintendo won't hinder hacked Wiis from participating in the online world. Most of us, I'd say, buy the games they love anyway. That's how I do it at least. Especially for really safekeeping my records like in Mario Kart.

just my two cents.

I believe this is called DRM. The same thing happens with iTunes online store, however with iTunes music you can authorize your music to be accessible to five or more PC's/Macs, DRM is a big in the mobile phone industry (especially for those little games you play on your phone). However even DRM protected mobile phone games have been cracked (if you call it that) quite successfully. However I think protection methods are going to eventually become un-crackable to the average home-brewer as there has been a good deal of R&D by many companies into this kind of protection scheme. I'm rather worried about Java DRM being placed on PS3 Blu-Ray discs, not to mention the slow down caused by Java but the Discs will be able to "figure out" if you are trying to burn them i.e. some kind of A.I. or intelligent agent.

Wii can and will be hacked (though they could detect it, probably). Wii games are stored on encrypted DVDs, and this encryption should be easy enough to bypass someday (Swap Magic for PS2, anyone?).

Um...

Hes showing how people said things before about stuff being unhackable, and then it was hacked, rather easily (for the PSP and Dreamcast at least).

You are classic. just classic.

By that logic, you should be able to play 360 games from an external hard drive. You CAN use them to stream video, music, etc. but still no games. It will be extremely easy for Nintendo to decide what can and cannot be read through those ports.

And the PS2 is how old? Aren't people just recently able to use hdloader over USB?

I think the Wii will eventually be cracked, but I'm anxious to see what types of checks they put in place. I am a very big fan of one of Microsoft's solutions: put a big-ass glob of glue or resin on the areas that may be vulnerable to hacks!

And eventually, there will be a modchip around that.
But I'm waiting for ROMS to work via DVDs as I go through DVDs like a mofo, and getting 4GB for an SD card is alot more expensive than getting 100 optical disks that hold 4.7GB each.

But as for Nintendo getting online protection from "pirateslikeus" I find it as a wall, but i think we will eventually get past it. I mean, a firewall is like a wall but sht hackers can get past the government, so i think we just need one of those types of hackers on the wii scene and we'll be seeing flashed wiis getting past everything (i think within 2.5 yrs of the wii being out) but i think that ROMs running off the wii will be possible within the first 8 months of the console being released.

Getting a PC emulator for it will be impossible, unless you can hack wiimotes too xD

I want to see Wii's protection too. After seeing Dell's (put screws with black paint on, and as soon as you stick in a screwdriver the paint's off!)
However, if Wii's protection is as easy as DS (Why did nintendo leave a hole there? I bet alot less people wouldn't have flashed their DS if they had to open it completely, i sure wouldn't! (Its not like i could though, i don't have a tri-screwdriver) then i will be parading around my neighborhood naked yelling "OMFG! OMFG! OMFG! MY WII IS FREE!" and follow my footsteps with wii as i have with DS.

Waiting for GBATemp to have Wii-related smilies... xD

DRM by its own design has one fatal flaw which in the long term always renders it useless. If I have DRM encoded content, at some point I need the key to be able to access it. While I agree the average home-brewer does not have the knowledge or scope of the system to be able to get at this key, all it takes is one guru-homebrewer to find out the secrets and all is lost. Just look at iTunes, Windows media and DVDs (weren't these all cracked by one guy anyway, DVD Jon?)

What is more significantly difficult to get around is needing to sign code. I have a feeling that given the Wii discs will be digitally signed, why not have their downloadable content signed too (plus DRM I guess). This would stop people just dropping their own roms into the system.

It will be extremely easy for Nintendo to decide what can and cannot be read through those ports.

Hacking Wiimotes should be rather easy to anyone with a bit on knowledge and equipment. According to the wiki article, it operates over bluetooth, and those adapters are cheap as for pcs, so all you need to do is capture the signal and reverse engineer it. The sensor bar will probably be slightly more difficult, but small steps at first ok?
