Misc I need help with wiimmfi

Im trying to play MKDS online on my 3ds with wimfi but I dont have a wep network and my iphone 7's hotspot doesnt support wep.

Ive tried messing with software for my mac and for windows (In a VM) but no luck.

I cannot mess with the router at my house because Im only 14 and live with my parents.

So, do I need 2 buy an old router or the nintendo wifi usb connector or is there anything else I can do to get it 2 work?

Then you're probably out of luck. I tried finding other solutions myself, the only one being a WEP hotspot on my phone.

I don't understand why "messing with the router" would be a problem. I mean, I am 14 myself and I just "messed with my router". I know it depends on how strict your parents are, but If you just explained the how harmless it is, they could maybe allow you. What I did was making a secondary SSID from my router, with WEP security just for my NDS and everyone was able to use the normal SSID without problems anyways. You could even make it to be hidden after you connect to it so it doesn't "bother" anyone

Seriously, this is the simplest method and also doesn't cost anything. If your parents are afraid you could "break" something, you could just tell them to contact your ISP's support line and telling them to set the SSID up for you!

This isn't really a great idea. WEP is so thoroughly broken security-wise, that it is only marginally better than having no security at all. I would definitely shy away from having a permanent WEP network...

As I explained above, there is an option to hide the SSID when the device connects, so no one will see it when scanning

Even if he decides not to hide it, no one will attack a random public WEP hotspot, especially if he doesn't live in a huge city. Again, he can just hide it.

That's not true; it will still show up with the proper tools. Hiding the SSID isn't really security, either.

I also assume that you don't know where he lives, so assuming a lack of potential intruders isn't a great idea either... If he lives near others at all, it's still a large risk. WEP cracking is very trivial. We are talking mere minutes to crack a WEP network.

If one is to make a permanent WEP network, they should take some basic steps: At the very least, put it on a separate subnet, so an intruder cannot mess with other computers on the main network. I would also only allow the DS' MAC address on the network, though this is trivial to circumvent, too. If you want to get fancy, it would also help to throttle the WEP network to dial-up speeds. That way, if anyone gets in, it'll be pretty useless for anything but playing DS games.

If he hides it, people won't know. And the next-door-hacker won't mind either, even if he sees the network on his advanced program. After all, it's up to the owner to take the "risk". He could also turn on MAC-Address filtering and add a more complex WEP key (not hard to crack, not easy to guess). And anyone can spoof a MAC Address, but I doubt someone will go that far.

We should not play with chances, but we should also not be over-sensitive.

My parents are all aware of the risks. I live in a remote area where people rarely pass by and my neighbours aren't that tech-savvy or bad. I am not trying to give false/dangerous advice, after all, he can read all of this and discuss with his parents. I am just trying to think of ideas on how to make a WEP SSID more secure. I, myself understand the risks and I believe that the OP can judge based on what is being posted here. Peace out
