Many months ago I modded my Wii U and had zero issues with it, I'm running Aroma btw. A couple weeks ago my SD card seemingly got damaged. I did learn that Wii U systems can potentially damage SD cards if you frequently read/write content off it. Maybe that's what did it??? It got corrupted randomly, I wanted to try fixing it without formatting but had no luck, I eventually gave up and tried formatting but not even my computer would let me do that. So, I decided to try to and start over. But the Wii U is telling me I need the "payload.elf" file to work. I can't just repeat the same steps from my old guides I used because of this.

I eventually found the file on here and tried to follow the instructions, but when that file's in the wiiu folder, my system just doesn't boot properly. It locks me on a black screen with the startup ambience looping. When I put it in it's own folder the Wii U boots fine doesn't detect it at all so it's running in "retail mode" basically. I could seriously use help with this. And if there's no solution... Is there a way I can maybe just put the vanilla firmware back on the system and start over 100%? I still have my NAND backup on my computer and my disc backups are on USB drives so I wouldn't lose everything at least.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm still sort of new to having a modded Wii U and I really want to fix it so I can enjoy it again.

(EDIT: Please don't ask me to clean the SD card. I've tried that. The SD card is definitely damaged but the system is fine. It's just not booting the way i want it to due to Payload.elf being missing. To clarify my issue, I just don't know how to set up and replace the necessary files on the SD card for the Wii U to work the way it should.)

bro BUY A NEW SD CARD. nothing is wrong with your system, im like 90% sure you have a fake sd card, and the other 10% of me thinks your SD card slot is dirty. just BUY A NEW SD CARD.

Buy a new SD card as the above person had said. Just because the SD card is damaged doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your system. If it boots up fine and functions fine then you do not need to panic. The only thing that is important, is that you should make sure you have frequent backups beforehand.

Mine isn't fake. I buy sandisks all the time and never had this issue with it. It suddenly stopped working while it was in the system. While I was transferring Wiiware games to and from the SD card it randomly told me it didn't recognize an SD card in the slot.

I have a spare SD card. My issue is that the system doesn't detect payload.elf and I don't know where to put it on the SD card without it causing issues.

That also happens with official ones, I had a SD Card that I used constantly since 2018, it was a SanDisk one, but in 2023 it started failing. When I rebooted my phone it got back to normal, but it was getting worser and more frequent each time it failed. When I formatted it, it worked just fine again, but only for 1-2 years, and when it failed again, I wasn't even able to format, it became read-only.

Maybe copy all the contents from the SD Card that isn't working to the spare one (if it still allows copying).

I can't copy the original contents to the spare sadly. The original SD card can't be read, I tried cleaning it but everytime I try to open it on my computer it says I need to format it. I can't even format it everytime I try to it says "Windows cannot format it properly"

The original one just doesn't work anymore for some reason? I tried to gather the homebrew files from the guides I used online but since the system is already modded they don't seem to be doing anything for me and it doesn't seem like I can just go through the process again.
