Hacking I have problems with GBA save files

I have M3 perfect lite and whenever I switch from GBA to DS mode or I pull out the card my gba save files are erased.Usually DS games need to be patched to work, but GBA games work wuthout patching and I just copy them and they work.Can this be the problem why I lose my save files or is it something else?Thanks in advance for those who help
