Most large chain stores are hard to work for. I work for Dollar General, and get treated like crap all the time by my boss. Those at my store never get enough accomplished for the boss's liking even though we all do our best to handle all the tasks we have to do (most of the time, anyway). It's something that's endured only for the paycheck because I can't afford to lose my job. I'm trying hard to find something better - it just hasn't come along yet.

I'm not taking walmarts side but typically they discourage employees taking off from black friday thru January 2nd because of the holiday rush. Your boyfriend should consider himself lucky to have gotten off at all. I only know this because my wife is a dept. Manager for a local walmart store and even she was given shit because she needed off for a doctors appointment. Walmart may be a decent place to shop but I would discourage anyone from looking at it as a place of employment.

That I know and he knew, which is why he requested all the way in August so they had enough time to find someone to take his place well he was out.

The second incident sounds bad. The first isn't. That business has rules and if you only ask for it off a week in advance, it isn't their fault. I'm sure they would have allowed someone to switch shifts with him anyway.
The bottom line is that WalMart pays him money and if he doesn't think this "mistreatment" is worth it, he should leave.

I liked when walmart came to my town around about 1993. Then, in about 2003, walmart built a new store right behind the 10 year old walmart building, then took the wrecking ball to the 10 year old building. It looks like I was over paying for my stuff if they could afford to demolish a 10 year old building. So, I never went to walmart again. I hate walmart.

I wouldn't recommend doing it during a tough economic time like it is today but there is no way they could hire enough people to cover a mass walk out/protest by workers in a store. They don't allow unions at WalMart. They will not hire union works and will fire people trying to make or join a union.
Personally I say our Walmart needs a walkout, the manage sucks there and they won't hire any new managers. I mean like they had only opened like 2 registers on some of the most active days and most of the time since Mike works later in the day they never have anyone working earlier in the day, so Mike gets there and has to clean up a mess that shouldn't be there in the first place. The mangers at mine are horrible at managing since they never really do their job.

I work at a supermarket (albert heijn) and they treat everyone like a piece of crap. My grandfather is in hospital since last friday, and I had to work on saturday. Visitinghours in the hospital were from 6 till 8, I had to work from 5 till 7. I come in, and they say I've got an extended shift. But before they can do that, they need to do a contract revision, which I never saw. They changed my contract, and copied my autograph onto the new one.
Anyway, I asked if I could leave at 7 because otherwise I wouldn't make it. The manager said I shouldn't have come to work in the first place, and that I could fuck off. If I went away at 7, I had to come back and work untill the middle of the night OR I could come in mondaymorning 6'o clock and work untill 12, when I need to go to school.
It's just bullshit. My grandfather is dying and I can't leave an hour early? It's ridiculous.

They should have told your boyfriend more soon. Shit, at my work (Wendys) the absolute minimum you must ask off is 2 weeks notice. Most people get their days off that way. Common courtesy for a week or more off is at least a month in advance. Same goes for two weeks, and I see your boyfriend did. I will not work at a Wal-Mart for the very reasons mentioned here.

That is also the reason I stopped shopping at WalMart. Everyone sees me there, but I'm not shopping, just dropping off and picking up Mike.
