It's propably done by holding certain buttons down when booting the game. It should say what to do in the manual.

IIRC there was no way to delete save files other than to save over your previous file

I think you could dip your cartrage in salt water or milk... that'd delete the save... not sure it would boot again though

Realistically though.... if you really need it deleted and you dont mind messing with the cartrage... you can sometimes open the cartrage, when you do there is a battary that powers the chip that holds your save games, if you remove or interrupt the circut, you should delete the saves.
