ROM Hack How to add an update to 3DS ROM?

Hi, Mario & Luigi Dream Team (U) with firmware spoofing works on CFW 4.5, however the v1.1 Update doesn't work on CFW 4.5, possibly because of no firmware spoofing. I remember reading a post mentioning updates can be added to .3DS rom files, however I've searched and can't find this information. Is there a tutorial? Thanks.
