How do you check which firmware a modchip has?

Ask the seller. They started shipping oled chips with hwfly-nx firmware instead of the official one several months ago, if you ordered recently it's probably got latest 0.7.1 flashed before it got shipped.

Or just download the firmware and flash it yourself to be sure. Connect the chip to computer and run the bat file, won't take you longer than 5 minutes.

So I only need to connect the modchip to my computer's USB port? It will not require any additional soldering?

Yes, no soldering required. Just use the supplied micro usb connector to connect the chip to your pc, wait for drivers to load and run the bat file, that's it.

Btw pay close attention to which way you insert the usb connector. For v4 the side with word "UP" should face upwards. You'll fry the chip's usb port if you connect it the wrong way. Here's a picture from aliexpress.

I got my v4 HWFLY OLED a few weeks ago and I asked the seller the same thing. They told me they ship with version 0.3.1 and said it is the best firmware for the chip. So I promptly installed the latest 0.7.1 via USB before installing the chip and it's working great.
