I'm just curious if there's any way to install Luma on the emuNAND side of my 3DS. both NANDs are at 4.2 and I'd really like to keep it that way for my sysNAND. If I can't have it that way then fuck it, I'm ok with just doing what I've gotta do to get to the latest firmware and play online again.

Yes, just follow https://3ds.guide and choose old 3DS and 4.2 for your firmware. You'll end up either doing the browser method (if you have one) or MSET. Make sure to follow the guide on sysNAND and not on emuNAND or in Gateway mode. If you have saves on Gateway games you should back them up before following the guide. See https://gbatemp.net/threads/importing-gateway-saves-to-cia-games.425743/
I followed that guide and got stuck at the end of this page https://3ds.guide/installing-boot9strap-(browser)

Now I just get Failed to mount CTRNAND when I turn on my 3DS. It's the first 3DS, was on 4.2. I can access godmode, but nothing I've tried gets rid of Failed to mount CTRNAND.

I found this site that has seemed to help quite a few people out https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/issues/748, but the solution the posted has been removed from 3ds.guide: https://3ds.guide/installing-arm9loaderhax.html#section-iv---restoring-the-system

No idea what to do next given I can't progress beyond the black screen with that text.

edit: all on sysNAND btw

At the end it says this:
  • If you get an error, just continue the next page
Then on the next page it says if you have an error to follow https://3ds.guide/9.2.0-ctrtransfer
