So I really want to access eshop but in order to do that i have to update my old 3ds XL(with cfw of course). I'm really scared to update it because I've bricked it exactly 4 times and had to get it fixed each time since people said it was fine to update it and I trusted them. I don't want to go to the shop to get it fixed again so can anyone tell me how I can update my 3ds to the latest version without bricking it?

first off. who would those people be? cause i see this is only your first post here. What fm do you have, what cfw do you got, and what version is the cfw you have on your console?

If you’re that concerned about bricks, why not get a compatible flash cart so you can unbrick it yourself using ntrboot?

Well people on reddit said it was fine. I don't know how to answer those questions because i wasn't the one who hacked my 3ds. Is there a way to check?

To start read over https://3ds.hacks.guide/ to understand whats going on. You can press and hold select on power and tell us what the version at the top of that screen shows.

The top says Luma3DS v10.0.1 configuration. I think im using b9s cause it says booted from sd via b9s on the bottom.

if you have bootstrap9 (sighax/b9s), iirc it's a bootrom exploit (same as NTRboot) like limera1n in old iphone days, this cannot be patched out by a software update so once you have b9s you can just update via system settings, ntrboot is more like a custom recovery like on android, it allows you to bypass the sysnand and boot software from a ds card, or you can directly boot firms from internal 3ds sd (you can flash b9s payload directly to ntrboot cards aswell and have a "FreeMCBoot" style setup) this is very useful as it can be used to restore any 3ds from any type of software brick (by now you should have a nand back up...ALWAYS BACK YOUR NAND AS UP THIS IS YOUR FAILSAFE)

In normal people speak yes you can update from system settings but just incase do a backup

tl;dr
with an NTRboot card you can install b9s and pretty much unbrick 99% of sysnand (software) bricks with a backup nand [this would include gateway bricks which doesn't matter since mine runs on a 11.13 emunand]

B9s = Unpatchable used to boot cfw and homebrew, iirc its effectively fake signing (like the trucha bug on wii), this is the most superior exploit as your console is exploited and has full system access as soon as you hit the power button effectively
