Hacking Homebrew Questions

Recently I was able to snag a Wii U for a really good price on eBay, planning on homebrewing when I receive it but I have a couple of questions.

Is there any way to determine if the console is banned without updating and going online?

I currently don't know the installed firmware version, but if it isn't the latest version, would there be any benefits to updating and then homebrewing?

not sure about question 1 but as for the second question it will tell you the firmware version in the wiiu system setting. It is also recommended to be on the latest system firmware for homebrew as you will have access to online games and the eshop plus many more benefits. Latest firmware is 5.5.1

Ah ok, I guess I'll just update when I receive the console, hopefully there won't be anything wrong with it.
