I'm trying to hack my friend's o3DS, but he forgot his PIN for parental control. I am able to pay the 50 cents to unlock it, but the 3DS does not have the serial number. Is there a way I can get to be unlocked without calling Nintendo?

It costs 50 cents to unlock a passcode? It was free in the Wii era.

If that fails, I actually called Nintendo and they were happy to give me the master key/pin for my system. (I bought it from a local used game shop and they didn't take it off.)

Once you downgrade, you can get the serial code back by running Decrypt9 and then running "System Information".

Oh right. Nintendo didn't ask me for my serial number either. Which was bizarre. Just the number the system gave me when asking to reset the pin.

It doesn't depend on the serial, just on the code the system gives you (which in turn is only based on system version and current date)!

Only in North America, home of capitalism!

forgot his pin? why would anyone set parental controls for their own device?
it blocks updates. I did it on my younger brother's 2DS back on 9.2 or 9.3 or 9.4. It now has a broken display, so I can't check it, but having it on <9.5 allowed me to gen Pokemon and inject them via the web browser injection ;)

Did you have a downgraded system settings app? The password requirement for updates was definitely removed before 8.x!

nope, not at all. It was stock. But afaik, and as far as I've tried, it didn't let me update unless I entered the PIN. Are you serious? Could it be I have a broken 8.x system and haven't fixed it yet? O.o God I'd say "fuck you" to my beloved 10.3 2DS if that one were on 8.x O.o

Yep, just found out the version on 3dbrew: "Once updated to 4.1.0-8, the parental-controls PIN is no longer required for future system updates."
