I don't like it, but outside of the 2DS style models (maybe New XL as an exception) annoyingly will continue to go up. For a time largely due to free money being thrown around with the lockdown, and the stigma of being the last dedicated only a handheld device from Nintendo the systems never lost value from the start(which was unique) but the games shot up stupid as well. Yet there seems to have been a pretty stark divergeance in the pricing between the handheld (still going up) and the games which seem to have dropped a lot and maybe are or have bottomed out or as much as they will for the near future? I remember seeing games at second hand retail that were like $60, $80, $100 used and they're like 1/2 that now at the same stores.

I'd say just bite the bullet, get a clean as a system as you can, a New XL model of some sort for the better boost in processor, total memory, overall performance and the built in little 2nd joystick nub and go from there. You can hack it (I choose not to, have enough stuff, and no time) or not and still do fine with the big pile of games for 3DS (AND DS) out there.

I only got back into it maybe 2 years ago, double good luck a month apart as I got a spotless oriignal midnight purple looking 3DS for like $80, and then right after a new black new 3ds xl unit which is mostly spotless other than some weird peeling on the back plate. If I could find a 1:1 copy or original, I'd swap it as it bugs me a lot but when someone throws out $100 and it's yours, it's mine.

Stick with buying a New 3DS XL or non XL New 3DS model. They are build really well. If you are on a budget, you can still find the original model 3DS and 2DS for $100 or less. Stay away from the 2DS XL, they are build like crap and prone to breaking. Not worth the price they are going for although their limited edition models are cool
I don't think it's cheaper, I know I'm not getting to replicate getting a dirt cheap, perfect condition JP 3DS as easily now (for a new3DS) as a decade ago in the appropriate country;

Thor would certainly solve a lot, and it's like paying ~2x the cost of another preowned Nintendo console for something considerably more powerful. I have a Steam Deck and I love it, it basically got me back into games; but that thing is very far from a perfect definition of portable, esp. if you have tiny hands like mine that get sore holding it without something to rest one's arms upon. It really ups the appeal of something so much tinier that's capable of emulating Switch games (and 3/DS stuff at a much higher internal res).

the games shot up stupid as well
It's particularly egregious with Nintendo-platform games, but in general it feels like Covid caused a lot of the more 'well off' millennials to start seeing hoarding as a 'hobby'. I feel bad for the sorts that just want to play things on original hardware. Though personal concern steps in regarding the Switch 2 and not knowing when they plan to stop manufacturing many Switch carts. Guessing in the dark how much time I have to grab a handful of first party games (i.e. not available on Steam) before they become absurdly overpriced.

Ebay listings for a bunch of GBA and WII games are already absolutely absurd.
