Hello all you gamers out there.. I recently manage to retreive my 3DSXL from my ex who deleted most of my games.

He was the one who installed all the games/fbi and all that. I have no clue what is what and i have spent the last 3 days in the web searching for answers...

I tried to redownload my games through the freeshop but i understand from forums that it has been shut down already..

This is what I have now on my system and the versions.

3DS XL Version : 11.9.0 -42U
FreeShop version : 2.1.3

Applications:
- BOOT NTR CFW SELECTOR
- The Homebrew Launcher
- FBI

I tried googling how to update or download games but i have been thrown around to different guides and tutorials and I'm already so upset with all the games I've lost.

Please help D;

Do you see grayed out X's at System Settings → Data Management → Nintendo 3DS → Software like this?

Mmmm, I saw a few pokemon games there.. But this 3 games, Lost in blue 1 - 3 is really old and it took him super long to finally find and download it for me.
the 3 of them does not appear in the screen above

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Damn all your ex did was delete your 3ds games? You dodged a huge bullet my friend.
Uhh... he threw my modded xbox, cpu and sound system out the window of our 14th storey apartment...
I just happened to find a tiny piece of my heart in the little things that I had left after the aftermath.. The 3DS is one of the 4 things that is still usable conditions.

Gamer boyfriend with a temper = Dangerous and expensive break up.. All the consoles were mine and we moved in together so i brought them from home.

These three are Nintendo DS games.
They will not appear on HOME Menu or in System Settings → ... → Software as they aren't 3DS or DSiWare titles. If you weren't playing these through a cartridge or DS flashcart, you might been using them from the SD card through something called:
  • TWLoader (discontinued, succeed by TWiLight Menu++)
  • SRLoader (renamed, succeeded by TWiLight Menu++)
  • TWiLight Menu++ (powered by nds-bootstrap)
  • CIA forwarder icons (powered by nds-bootstrap)
***

For missing 3DS and DSiWare games you wish to reacquire through manual means, you will have to resort to Google searching CIA files and installing them with the FBI app. We can't directly tell you or name places that host copyright materials or warez, but here's a search hint: that ISO site.

Also considering updating the custom firmware using this guide:
  • Updating B9S
  • You can cheat a little collecting files with this starter kit if it helps. Here.

Consider this the best investment you ever had. Some significant others are not so lucky in that they themselves bodily get thrown out from said tall buildings or stoned to death if displeasing their husbands. I know from certain cultures, a guy who cheats or earns the scorn of his ex-girlfriend/wife gets their junk cut off to be either fed to a duck or tied to a balloon, forever lost...

Not saying you should commit such acts or have something similiar done to you, but yah you're doing great dodging that bullet like what @Maluma said. Do you have any friends (specifically not shared by said ex) that you can rely on during this precarious period [ie, buddy system]?

THanks for all the info! I'll slowly read up on what to do.
Would it be better to "reformat" the whole thing and start from scratch?
I am using a mac book with only type c plugs.. i cant connect my DS over local network to transfer files into the memory card.
Should i just open it up and directly feed it into my laptop to transfer games?

I have no idea about the flashcart or whatever.. Basically i buy the console and he hacks it. :/
Nah, I am here alone.. I came to this city because of him and I will be leaving soon also because of him.
We broke up 2 weeks ago and it has been quiet.. so i hope to keep it that way without any other issues. I believe he is not one to do stupid things either.

Thanks for the concern :))

Now i'll go read up on all the thingaboos.

Oh. My. God. This is one of the few situations in which I feel good about being a total loser and single for my whole life. Love that transforms to hatred. It’s better not to be alone in such a case.

  • No need to reformat or start from scratch (formatting does not remove custom firmware anyway). Just download and unpack the cfw starter kit and get your games.
  • If you can't connect to the 3DS with the official file transfer, get the SD out and put files on it.
  • From this point on, you will have ftpd and can connect to the 3DS with an ftp client like Filezilla.
Doing some reading is always a good idea. You will be able to do hacking/cfw yourself and not depend on a hothead. If you have any questions, just ask.

Once you’re done with the unpleasant or even threatening situation and have time to deal with profane things again, think about a backup strategy. While this does not prevent physical damage or material loss, a good backup strategy (with offsite backups) is resistant against raging boyfriends, burglars, fire and other disasters. Depending on what data you store, you can lose much more valuable information than games. Things that can't be replaced.

I know from certain cultures, a guy who cheats or earns the scorn of his ex-girlfriend/wife gets their junk cut off to be either fed to a duck or tied to a balloon, forever lost...
Please, Mr. Poo. NO! While I already knew about this, it is gross and… triggers a lot of BGI (brain-generated imagery).

You can start anew reformatting the SD card in FAT32 + 32 KB cluster size and using that guide + starter kit to make a clean slate setup. You might also need to check if the 3DS still has its NNID linked if it was under his username.

For any games already installed but you wish to keep / reinstall later, dump them into CIA files:
For game saves + extdata, you can back them up with Checkpoint or JKSM save manager.

:!: Whatever you do, don't uninstall the custom firmware with this. There's a high chance of software bricking the 3DS if you removal it.

Does your Mac have a SD card slot? If it does not, you'll need a multi card reader adapter with USB C to read/write the (micro) SD card.
You'll have fun with reacquainting yourself with the custom firmware and homebrew side of your 3DS. While there's no substitution to friendship, the 3DS does make for a great distraction and emotional aid as long as your other needs are met.

Her pain is a sharp kind that'll gradually subside and gets better. Something, something William Shakespeare, better to have loved than never at all, something. :(

Yours I'm keenly familiar with it... This pain does not dissipate, but erodes your well being as time goes by. While the answer/solution is simple:
  • get off the Internet
  • hit the gym
  • talk to people even if you're socially weird and don't feel like it
Carrying these out in a continual manner is harder to do than said. This is made worse when you see the world is a less nice place than it was before.

Please, Mr. Poo. NO! While I already knew about this, it is gross and… triggers a lot of BGI (brain-generated imagery).
Huehuehue. :)
I wanted to let @Akeshire know that relationship abuse and mistreatment cuts both ways.

I dont understand the stuff said in the guide that poo posted in his initial post.
I would really hate to f it up more then it already is..

I dont really understand the technical acronyms and jargens..

What is CIA? and why is it better than ROM.. I know a little bout ROMs.. U can use them on emu on your phone and stuff or laptop..

@Akeshire, you'll first need to familiarize yourself with how custom firmware and homebrew works. Even though your 3DS is already hacked, study and read up everything you can at 3ds.hacks.guide. This is where almost every 3DS users refer to when they first hack their systems. I suggest follow along reading (but not actually participate doing) the NTRboot method of taking an unhacked 3DS and putting CFW on it. This is to get your feet wet so to speak as if you did the hacking yourself.

While it's hard to keep track what everything is at first, keep in mind that the custom firmware is separate from the 3DS firmware. While not a perfect analogy, your 3DS firmware is like iOS or Mac OS. The custom firmware (JailBreak) would be like a computer virus that high jacks and disables certain security measures... Oh god, this is a terrible analogy. Anyway, let's say this is virus is "good" in that it doesn't steal personal info, slows down your computer, or shows you pop up ads. All it does is lets you play free games and run fan made programs you couldn't have otherwise before because they weren't explicitly approved by Apple and its iTune store (think license cost or brand image hurdles). Another way to see custom firmware is that it's like putting add-ons to a web browser.

Try to avoid watching YouTube video tutorial and guides as they tend to be outdated and leave out crucial details / warnings. You may use those as a visual aid until you're more familiar how something works and looks like. However, always cross reference what you see and learn back to 3ds.hacks.guide as this is the original source guide.

These are the core components most important in descending order:
  • boot9strap - the "good" computer virus.
  • Luma3DS - There's no direct analogy in terms of iOS or Mac OS. This would be like LineageOS over normal Android.
    • This is like added toppings and syrups on vanilla ice cream. It's still vanilla ice cream at its very core, but now accentuated with several more flavors.
  • GodMode9 - kinda like Windows bootcamp or recovery mode... You need to do certain things in it that can't be done in Mac OS.
  • Homebrew Launcher - Netflix. Open it to use apps not found on HOME Menu.
  • FBI - the *.cia installer. This can add or remove 3DS roms or games that appear on HOME Menu.
  • Anemone3DS - defacto homebrew theme installer.
  • and so forth depending what your interests lie in.

Why should screenshots be annoying? You should be able to upload them right here on GBAtemp. If the spam protection does not allow you to do that yet (new member), paste them on an image board or whatever these sites are called and share the links (In the worst case with spaces like: htt ps :// path_to_my_image .co m)
  • .CIA = CTR Importable Archive → CTR-001 is the model number of the first 3DS (old 3DS not XL). This is the format games are delivered by the Eshop. You can also build CIA files yourself from cartridges you own (with GodMode9) or download them illegally (don't ask about where to get warez here!)
  • .3DS Dumped cartridges; "ROMs". Not directly useful for custom firmware (CFW) but for the Citra emulator. The name "Citra" is also derived from the "CTR" of the first 3DS model. The.3DS files can be converted to CIA if needed.
  • NAND The flash memory inside the 3DS console. Comparable to the HDD, or better SSD of a computer.
  • NAND backup Image copy of the NAND. Restore in case something goes really wrong (but ask before!)
  • ntrboot: If the sleep mode is triggered (with a magnet or the sleep switch on O2DS) and you start the system while holding START+SELECT+(X)+Power for some seconds, the DS tries to start from an NTR cartridge. (NTR-001 first DS model, DS-"phat"). Because Nintendo made a mistake in the checking program ("Is the cartridge signed by Nintendo?") ntrboothax is possible and allows CFW installation in any case. Can not be patched by Nintendo in software - hardware flaw. Can be used to repair even the worst kinds of software failures. Even in case of intentionally deleting the NAND. Don't do that though! *Cough*
  • boot.firm The file boot9strap (B9S) loads at startup. Usually it's the Luma CFW.
  • TWiLight Menu ++ Software to load DS (non-3DS) ROMs from the SD. Uses the TWL firmware (TWL-001 is the model number of the DSi)
  • CTRTransfer Roughly: A method to restore the 3DS operating system in case of no existing/not working NAND backup.
