Would like to give my sincere thanks and gratitude for DarkAkuma's massive work with the VC Manager! This makes it manageable to play VC Games that aren't available on the NSO titles, which makes it easier to play w/o having to use Retroarch

Tho I got one quick question:
When one of the NSO apps update, are you allowed to update it and keep the custom games on the app? Or are you not allowed to update.

I would really appreciate any assistance I could get on this. I've tried to add some GBA pokemon roms several times and they fail to show up, I tried using MTP and copying manually. I realized that the GBA NSO file on my switch is named "010012F017576000" but the file cave generates is "0100555017574000". I'm sure the Database version is correct (3.2) so I don't understand what the reason for the disparity is. Could someone please tell me how to fix this?

Make sure you are using the correct region.

One ending 6000 is USA
One ending 4000 is ASIA/JAPAN

Yes I just realized that after digging in the thread, whats odd is that I am on USA, I've even switched to japanese and back to US and it still produces a Japanese file. Even after redownloading Cave fresh it still keeps giving me a Japanese file.

Edit: I "fixed" it, which is to say I changed the file name and changed it in the XML for cave which allowed me to MTP the Rom successfully. I'm pretty sure this isn't a proper fix so I would still like to know if I'm doing something wrong or its a bug, but at least it works for now.

does this work on fully updated v2 switch 1's? I checked the faq and didn't see anything. I'm looking to add a couple of GBC games, like MGS Ghost Babel and dragon warrior monsters 1&2.

Has anyone managed to get the Super Mario Bros rom hack 2 player by corpsegrider to work on the NES NSO app via CaVE database manager? Does 2 player simultaneous have to be enabled on the database?

It seems that it was not much of an issue here... but I FINALLY got DisplayEx- for VB updated for v1.1 and v1.2! And there is now a normal DisplayEx for VB v1.1+ too, for supporters.

I'm sorry about that!

Earlier this year I started the Full Unlock revamp... then the new VB app came out of nowhere and needed far more of a DisplayEx than normal, since the unmodified version is extremely lacking. These back to back larger projects took a toll on me. Combined with that... Both projects were made with a public version in mind. I normally don't do mods for non-supporters, and... The reception of both... back to back... reminded me why. That killed my drive and motivation even more.

When the Virtual Boy app updated to v1.1 so quickly, my code was not in a good state... and I was just not in the right mind to solve the issues it had. So the project has been stalled since then.

But recently I mulled over a path to solve things with my limited interest, and was able to plow through to the end!

---

Virtual Boy DisplayEx- for v1.1+ is largely the same as the old one, except... 3D Mode support is removed, and I added a feature that removes the warning screen in 2D mode.

The main features that will take more time to maintain are in the normal version for supporters. That mainly includes 3D Mode, and 2D Mode switching between Left/Right views of the emulator.

I don't plan to work on this any more right now. I shouldn't until the announced color options are added. Then id probably add Top/Bottom 3D support (swear I worked on that... but guess not...) and maybe Anaglyph.

To recap the features, new and old...
- (Minus) Version in White.
Normal version in Purple.
  • Removes restriction on Docked Mode.
  • Adds 2D Mode support.
  • Removes warning popup at start for 2D Mode.
  • Adds Fit to Screen option for 2D Mode.
  • Adds option to toggle on/off the Scarlet theme.
  • Adds 3D Mode support (SBS).
  • Adds Crosseyed view option for SBS 3D Mode.
  • Adds Stretch to Fit Screen for SBS 3D Mode.
  • Adds a toggle to switch between what Left/Right view is displayed in game with 2D Mode. (ZL/ZR)
As most here would be using the Minus version, to download that... navigate to the CaVE updates folder and delete "update_2026-03-10.json". Restart CaVE and it should force it to redownload the update, and download the mod.

hi everyone. so far so goood, the CaVE works flawlessly, thanks to darkakuma. but i have to use the UMS device on hekate to sync database, the DBI MTP method did not work? any idea to make it work? it didn't recognise the device at all

OK, the newest VB update is out! Includes all games they intended to release, as well as the color filters. Can't wait to see your next update! And hope it works on the newest firmware!

I just released the update for CaVE and DisplayEx for supporters. I'm shaving off a couple days for the public release. That will be due on Sept 4th.

Color scheme support is definitely different than I expected. It makes a little more sense now, as to why it took them so long. It's not just flat color variations. They added OG Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Super Game Boy, and Game Boy Color schemes as well... making this quite a bit more playable. It's about as playable as any Game Boy game now. It really makes 2D Mode more viable!

Speaking of 2D Mode. I'm thinking of bringing the left/right screen toggle over to the public version of DisplayEx... Once I get 3D Anaglyph support working... If I can get 3D anaglyph support working...

I have been waiting for this update so I can leverage NERDs color scheme option for anaglyph. I havent worked on it yet as I wanted to prioritize release of the base update before new features. But... from the looks of how its done... I'm not sure if I can. It won't be easy at least. The color stuff is applied in the binary. The emu. Not the GUI. So I cant just intercept things in the GUI with my own code to say "Output one eye as Cyan, and the other as Red". The output comes back as 1 color scheme, and thats it.

I have some options to try though. So I'm not writing the feature off just yet. My tests before this color scheme stuff when trying to do it, got really close. But not close enough for me to feel satisfied. I'm hoping this feature will get it the rest of the way to being viable.

Oh. This snuck in a minor new addition too. Scarlet theme mode has a new White text option. Its less of an eye sore. I worked the options for it in with the checkbox I had. So you have 3 theme variations.

Here's a image of GBC mode with Fit to Screen 2D.

And here's a video of me cycling through the color schemes in 2D mode.

GB v4.1 + GBA v3.3 Update support is now available for the public build via the automatic update feature.

In other news... I was made aware of a minor issue with the VB DisplayEx. It's now fixed in v1.3. If you are seeing a pop up every time you load the app in older versions, just hold the L trigger while booting the app, get through the pop up pages and into the main app. This loads the app without CaVE/DisplayEx. You can then exit and load normally with CaVE/DisplayEx and not see the pop up. This only needs to be done once. The fix will make this workaround not needed going forward. When the public/minus version of 1.3 comes out, this will not be a concern.

Oh man that is sooooo cool! Keep up the awesome work! How does one become a supporter?

Yea... I should put that in my sig... or something... :ha:

Ohh haha. Signatures don't show on mobile and 99% of the time, I'm on mobile.

Can anyone please help me? Im trying to add the Super Mario Bros Rom Hack that allows 2 players to play simultaneously made by Corpse Grinder to the NES NSO app via CaVE database manager. But as much as I try I cant seem to add it even though I try to use different roms found online, patches, or other methods to my knowledge. Has anyone gotten that rom hack to work via CaVe database manager and if so how did you do it? Because I dont think it should be hard to add a rom hack of the most iconic NES game to the NES Classic app via CaVe database so PLEASE if anyone has the answer let me know I just really want to play it on the NES NSO app with my Dad, girlfriend, or anyone else close to me it would cheer up my horrible life

Sorry for the insistent request of adding Super Mario Bros NES 2 player simultaneous by Corpse Grinder and TI to the NES Classic app via CaVE database manager everyone here including @DarkAkuma it's just that I really do want to figure out how to play that rom hack as it adds the incredible ability to play with the people close to me and can take advantage of online multiplayer if a custom network like Nextendo Network supports CaVe database manager. So please any help that can be offered would put me at ease

First of all, that hackrom works on original hardware ? If the answer is no, probably you wont be able to make it work on the nso app.
You could try emulate it on retroarch and user the netplay feature if you wanted to play online. As far as I know, thats currently not working on the nso apps.

Yes it does work on original hardware. Maybe I just need to compress the patch file or try using other roms because i have gotten closer to making it work on the NES classic app compared to others as most of the time it crashes and gives me the usual error and other times it opens the game on the app but it is just a grey screen so Im still figuring it out. And online multiplayer is techincally possible with that game if a community network that replaces NSO supports CaVe Database Manager

I normally wouldn't post this here... trying to keep this thread focused on the Public release stuff. But it was a lot of work, and a milestone. So... this can be a mild exception!

I have finished work on the Virtual Boy DiplayEx mod! By that I mean, the normal one, and all the features I had planned/hoped for it. But indirectly the public/Minus version too.

To me... Nintendo dropped the ball with the Virtual Boy app. Rather than trying to make it usable by as many people as possible, they instead choose greed and pushing for the app to only be usable by purchasing extra hardware. They could have EASILY added 2 more modes to make it much more widely usable... but didn't. 2D and 3D Anaglyph.

Well... That's where DisplayEx comes in. You know about 2D mode. That's available in the public/Minus version of DisplayEx. But now... I bring you support for Anaglyph 3D! And... at the same time I also added Top/Bottom 3D while polishing up the Side-by-Side 3D mode.

Change Log:

  • Added Top/Bottom 3D support.
    • Requires a 3D monitor that supports the mode.
    • Stretch to Screen option available for displays that support it.
  • Added Anaglyph 3D support.
    • 8 Anaglyph color formats including Red/Cyan, Red/Blue, Yellow/Blue, Magenta/Green and the inversion of those.
    • Selection of the different color formats is done via pressing Left/Right on the D-Pad on the Anaglyph option in the settings menu.
    • This option forces the Grey/White color palette in game, but the actual visible output depends on the color format.
  • Side-by-Side and Top/Bottom 3D modes have been adjusted for a proper 16x9 aspect ratio. Before Side-by-Side was using a 4x3 aspect ratio.
  • Side-by-Side, Top/Bottom and Anaglyph 3D modes all now support Fit to Screen.
  • Holding the Right Stick down to bring up the IPD/Size/Color Palette menus has seen some changes.
    • Color Palette selection in 2D mode now uses the proper UI, complete with sound effects. It retains the extra bonus of using the D-Pad to cycle through the options.
    • In Anaglyph mode the IPD pop up is named Convergence. The effect is basically the same, but continuing to call it IPD would be incorrect.
  • A bug with Reset Game has been fixed. It was causing a app freeze before.
  • Fixed the Red/White Scarlet Theme options... again. Should be final this time!
  • Added Dim in Handheld for VR mode.
  • Finally fixed a issue where selecting VR mode then 3D mode would dim 3D mode, until you selected 2D mode then 3D mode. Dimming in 3D mode in general should be gone.

Future:

The public/Minus version is still scheduled for release on September 4th. But now it will be enhanced over what it would have been otherwise. All the non-3D features and bug fixes mentioned above will be included.

Additionally, as promised, the 2D mode feature of pressing ZL/ZR to switch between the Left/Right views will then be available in the public/Minus version, rounding out its 2D mode to be feature complete and 100% viable to use to play games and have fun.

With this update... I think I am done on the development phase of this mod. Meaning it will now go into the maintenance phase like every other app mods. Where I just update it to keep it compatible with the latest versions of the app, mostly.

Outro:

I do want to thank the supporters. You/they all keep the projects going, make me even consider working on some projects like this in the first place, and make me push through the hard stuff. This is... exactly such a project. I had to go so far out of my way to make this, that if not for supporters... I would have given up after the lackluster initial release of the Minus version.

That said... I do understand that... the app and platform itself is not the most exciting or nostalgic. It is a app for a failed system. No truly stand out memorable games. So the audience for this app is limited from the start. But... thats also been why I felt this mod was needed, with a public version. The audience pool is limited form the start. My mod hopes to expand and make the app more viable to use by people who would rightfully write it off before due to "not having the Labo kit" or "not wanting to spend over $100 on a piece of plastic (with no controller)". With the new color palette options, combined with 2D mode... you can play this like normal Game Boy games. Or if you have a cheap pair of Anaglyph glasses around (or want to spend like $2-5 on some online), you can play it in 3D.

So... I do understand if this update continues the muted response. I'll just have to hope it helps expand the usability and popularity of the app in the long run!
