I've been watching through the DVD sets of the CW series Smallville. Today I was watching the episode "Injustice" from season 8 and I saw Clark using a PSP as a tracking device. Clark was using to show Bette/Plastique that Tess Mercer had tracers/explosives planted in all of the Injustice League's brains.

It was only a brief scene but I know it was a PSP and the only way to get one to do that is by hacking it. And there are other instances when I've seen PDAs and maybe mobile phones used for things that likely cant normally be done.

Could this mean that network TV supports the hacking community?

...No.

It's just them being lazy and not making up their own fanciful gadgets. It's also advertisement.

Why do you think you see so many Macs in movies?

Maybe they just stuck a video on the PSP, put the hold on and tried to make it look real.

That's what I think when I see shit like this.

This is usually what they do.

Or they apply the video to the screen during editing.

edit: It's just the way tv show creators like to make nerds rage.

I like this theory -- seems like the cheapest way to fake it.

These are also the kinds of shows where somebody can bang on a keyboard to hack an IP address, trace an IM conversation to a home address, take a 640x480 10% quality JPEG and magnify it to 5,000% with no quality loss, and more.
Gotta love Chloe Sullivan. She can do all that and more.

Don't you just love it when you see a modern console like the PS3 or Xbox360 making generic, atari-style bleep and bloop noises in TV shows? Or the person holding the controller waves it around madly like they're trying to land a record swordfish? Video games still get no respect, man, none at all.

Either way, if it wasn't really hacked IRL, its hacked in the show.
I find it more likely that they're just pretending a PSP can do that with the knowledge that most people who watch the show have no idea it can't, and it doesn't really matter that some viewers do. It's no different from seeing someone in a movie playing a Playstation game that doesn't actually exist.

There is a very good chance that it is a screen replacement as well. Matchmover the image you want to appear on the screen, crank the luminance and bang.
