Gaming GTX 295 vs Radeon 5870? Also, G300 vs R5900

Just curious...
I'm wondering how they stack up when you pile together as many videocards as possible in SLI/CrossFireX on the best hardware available (read: Core i7 975 EE OC'd, 24GB DDR3 2000 RAM, 4x Intel X25-E SSDs in RAID 0, maybe this mobo?)
Mainly interested in game benchmarks running at max resolution and eye candy.

(BTW remember it's X25-E, not X25-M)


Also I'm interested on your thoughts about the GeForce 300 series vs the Radeon 59xx series that will both come out shortly.

Cant say for ati as I have Nvidia cards but the rest of the setup fits my pc and basicly my laptop (laptop only has 12 gigs of ram tho and 280M in sli) and benchmarks arent that much of an increase nowdays. Ive ran a few games on my setups recently cause i switched all my pcs to win 7 heres a fps rundown.

Now these are MAX fps not average in average testing desktop had a average of 122 with lowest fps being a 68 (on borderlands) and highest on wow.

Id sugest surfing youtube to see videotests of many cards and laptops and pc models runing various things. because if you can ultra cooldown a system and keep it at that temp u can crank up the OC and probably get better specs than a higher end card where you dont have a cooling option. Good test is runing your pc with AC off and all extra cooling systems off(just fan on) and see the fps for 60 secs it will drop some as to what it started but just by turning AC on it improves and adding cooling systems also helps a lot and alows many OC options. theres a nice vid in Youtube where they take the i7 core clock to almost 6Ghz now thy used liquit nitrogen for that and even so they basicly added more than 1 ghz to the clock core. Also brands and manufacturers count its not the sam ea BFG 295 GFX to a EVGA 295 GFX, and also to what parts you chose to go with it. All in all curent hardware can last for a while even if companies will keep doing better and never ones. only benefit of it its the price drops for the casual gamer that makes awsome pc for gaming come down in price to around console retail.

295 is still the strongest single card. just give the 5870 time, wait for the drivers to mature and you should be seeing much better performance. though it all depends at what resolutions you do play at to get the best out of your card.

as for nvidia's gt300 series... we haven't exactly heard much about them. beside 1.7%.

The 5870 is the best single GPU solution. It can outperform the GTX 295 at certain games. Is cheaper also.

The maturity of the drivers is always a thing, under windows 7 my GTX 260 would give me blue screen's while playing a certain game.

This hasn't happened to me on my 5870. If you need benchmarks check http://www.hardocp.com they have plenty of benchmarks there.

Beware that the 5870 is a long card will not fit in every midi case.

Oh and Nvidia GT300 isn't coming out until late Q1 maybe it wont be available to the public until later then that date.

as you can see, the 295 still performs better at resolutions under 2560*1600.

yup thats why I use 295's my display its a 120hz HDMI HDTV so i run all at 1080P

actually its just 2 GTX260's PCB's slapped together and internal SLI

Currently they are using a hardware revision (single pcb)for the 295 where it is cheaper then a slapped together pair of 260's .

The ATI 5870 is faster then a GTX 295 on games that are pushed by the GPU not CPU.

plus you have DX11 supported by the card which will end up serving you for computational tasks like audio/video encoding.

The ATI 5870 is by far superior way less of a power hog as well.
