A Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars flyer circulating at NYC Comic Con this past week revealed some very interesting tidbits about how Rockstar plans to use the DS’s Wi-Fi capabilities. As a big fan of developers pushing weaker hardware, I couldn’t resist posting this.

Here’s what the flyer reads:

* All new replay feature allows you to replay all of your favorite missions
* Nintendo Wi-FI mode means head-to-head and co-op multiplayer mayhem
* Stat tracking and leaderboards that track your criminal career
* Epic storyline with tons of side-missions, addictive mini-games and hidden collectibles

What’s impressive here is not just that Rockstar is including multiplayer in the game, but that they’re including co-op multiplayer and stat-tracking, which is nothing short of amazing considering this entire affair is going to be on the Nintendo DS. It’s kind of hard not to get excited at the thought of portable GTA with multiplayer.

Every single time I read about Chinatown Wars, it seems more and more likely that this will be the game that gets me back into GTA, which I stopped enjoying after the series went full-3D. Part of it has to do with the fact that the game is set in Chinatown - a welcome change from San Andreas and Vice City and what have you.

Update #1:

Seems there was some confusion in what you can actually do in the game. Here is what you actually do:

- online interactivity does not include multiplayer
- multiplayer is local system play
- online connectivity allows sharing of locations, chat features, and item-trading with friends
- stats can be uploaded to the Rockstar social site
- “special contests, events, and promotions” are coming

FINALLY
i was beginning to wonder if the wifi was only leaderboards
but HECK YEAH.
another co-op. we can have partners in crime!!
and head to head is awesome too
i am really excited.

The wi-fi modes are going to suck big time. It's gonna be the complete opposite of what everyone expects. Probably some rush job in order to get a wi-fi stamp and have people be more interested in the game.

They announced Wi-Fi back when the game was announced, they just never said what it was going to be used for. So I think they may have worked on it.

nice news
i knew it has multiplayer but CO-OP... WOW

DUKES is a GTA IV Borough)
So the map should look like this

So sweet ^^.

This game is for sure going to be an early 09' game of the year.

I can feel it.

Does anyone know if you can fly airplanes? D:

The only GTA games I have ever played were 2 and SA. Hopefully I find this game just as enjoyable. I don't really care much about doing the missions though because I mostly just play the games in order to mess around since the pedestrians and stuff are really interactive and it's fun

.

My 2 favourite GTA games I played were Vice City and GTA 2, GTA 4 imho wasn't that good because it was a bit too detailed where running was kinda slow and so was driving. I hope this game is gonna be great

Does anyone remember the old days when fanboys would keep saying GTA would NEVER EVER come out for DS?

We shall all laugh in their face.
