Gaming Great games too childish

I used to care about how I would look playing games like Elebits, Chocobo Tales or Super Princess Peach because I'm more of a tomboy and anti-girly but someone talked me into trying the games and I finally realized-who gives a shit?

Fun games are fun, "childish" or not.

Not all games that look like Teletubbies are aimed for children. Try letting a 6 yr old play with Ninjatown and see if he can even get past stage 1.

I agree with everything's been said. The DS games are a bit childlike and based obviously for an audience of children... however that doesn't disturb me at all.

One thing that saddens me is, in general, that there is a lack of more serious based RPGs like good ol' Baldur's Gate or stuff like that, not just AD&D setting, but with that dark and more "mature" style.. most of the times those j-rpg with a childlike story are all the same, the character (that looks no older than 16) is a random dude that finds a weird power and has to defeat a girly-like boss that tries to conquer the world, and he does it through friendships and the power of love (yes, I'm looking at you square-enix!!). However cool (and those games are cool, I like playing them) I'd love to play an RPG with more subtle plot and more in-deph characterization, with a story that makes sense and is realistic, also with maybe a basis of philosophy behind it.. I know maybe I want too much heh

However as I said, those childlike games don't bother me at all!

ps: a great example of a game would be Final Fantasy Tactics, while keeping cutesy graphics it has a very deep plot which is kind of hard to follow with lots of surprises... in fact that game is a masterpiece... but it's been kind of ruined with FFTA/FFTA2... I couldn't stand those.. >.

I felt that way about Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime. It was a great game but made for children.

Speaking of that game, I would love for them to make a WiiWare game for just the Tank Battle portion of the game. Even make it wifi.

I agree with OP. I admit that the cartoon-like or simple graphics look way better on the DS than trying too complex 3D (just look at the tombraider games, they look like vomit) but still, the whole DS library needs some serious games. I've been seraching for almost half a year now for a more mature game that takes the player seriously. That doesn't involve "KAWAII DESU NE" stupid overused anime jokes. There was ninja gaiden. Ok hack and slash but it had a neat story, nice atmosphere, good graphics etc. The only games that shown some promise were horrible in gameplay. I mean srsly the DS was not ment to have FPS games developed on it imho (I'm talking about metroid, and moon).

OFF
The last game I had some hopes for was some JRPG. I was like, ok let's give it a shot. After the protagonist met the ^__^ face annoying possible female love intrest and she started whining about childish wierd stuff, I still gave it a chance. But then after of course over 9000 random encounters and jelly monsters and 2 hours grindfest I was finally given something about the plot. But imho if you need to spend 2hours of wandering around just to get a mini cutscene in an RPG is kind of irritating. So that's when I lost it and never again had I played that game.
/OFF

So it's not just that the theme of these games are immature but also they are designed for kids with an IQ of 50. "OOOO LOOK AT THE GOOEY MONSTER BASH BASH! OH WHAT'S THIS?! DIALOG?! I DON'T WANT DIALOG I WANT KILL MONSTER GIMMI MAH MONSTEEERS! YAY A PORING GOOEY MONSTER"

Sorry I like to dramatize my thoughts.

Weird, that sounds exactly like a lot of games that aren't even jrpg related.

So it's not just that the theme of Halo is immature but it's also designed for kids with an IQ of 50 "OOOOOO LOOOOOOK AT THE GOOEY ALIENS SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT! GO AWAI KORTANA I DNT NEED STORY, I MUST KILL THE DEMONS, SHOOT SHOOT GIMMEH MOAR HUNTARS AND N00BS TO PWN!!!"

Hey, look I got another one.

So it's not that the theme of Mario is immature, but it's also designed for kids with an IQ of 50 "OOOOO LOOK AT THE GOOEY GOOMBAS STOMP STOMP! GO AWAI TOAD I DON'T CARE IF MY PRINCESS IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE , GIMME MOAR KOOPAS!"

If you want a hard-ish RPG that takes more strategy than button mashing, go try the Shin Megami Tensei games. They're fairly challenging.

Whats with people and hating a game for childish storylines? I think they are better then the stuff "adult" games come up with.

Steal a car, win game.

Personally, I loved the FFTA2 storyline, but trolls bashed it because it was for kids. I don't know what's wrong with this generation and the drive to achieve maturity.

I was talking about RPGs not FPS games. And yes, that's the same thing I think about those too and all the other crap. Only few have a well written story to be worth it. BUT! There is a difference. Shooting stuff like a maniac can be fun at some points becouse it's a) real time b) looks good c) has it's thrill. On the other hand just having random encounters in a TURN BASED RPG that has a shitty story against enemies that are all the same is just boring.

Hold it. I've never said that all childish games are bad. I've enjoyed Super Mario world and a lot of others, heck I've even liked Kirby, I was just saying that a few serious games wouldn't be so bad. And I was mainly mocking the jRPGs that are released nowdays on the DS. Dragon's quest VI? Give me a break...

Sounds like either you've been playing really bad jRPGs, or you don't know what a bad game is. Sure a lot of jRPGs are dumbed down and simplistic to the point where all you have to do is button mash (Final Fantasy, etc) but there are a lot of hard games out there which make you conserve items and MP/SP/Whatever, and force you to use strategy to get out of a fight alive. If you spend the time grinding, then yes all you have to do is rapidly mash A, but if you play the game it's meant to be played (i.e. progessing), then you might actually find it a challenge.

Also, Dragon Quest is actually pretty challenging if you don't grind the fuck out of it, it isn't deep and you can just mash A if you heal up after every fight, but certain parts of it will just make you want to give up.

I certainly know what a good jRPG is: Star Ocean series, almost all the old SNES Square and Enix RPGs... etc. (damn that was a while ago... )

Yea there are some. Oh and I'm sorry about Dragon's quest, that one I haven't played yet but it's just that I'm kind of getting bored of the "dragons, magic swords, young hero...etc." concepts. That's why I see TWEWY as a shining gem in the ocean of crap. It was hard, I had a neat story, It made you use the stylus, and wasn't in fantasia land of dragons and unicorns.

Edited the first part so that no one misunderstands it again.

haha that's such an over generalization man, ' steal a car win game?' haha that's called GTA, hardly a genre of games is it? :/

Great posts also Alucat

glad someone's with me on this one. the' ^__^ girl' was such a perfect comment! XD

Fact is that the adolescent-aimed games with their 6.4 million shades of mud don't transfer very well to handheld gaming - games which look and function best on the small screen are those with bright colours and simple, stylised characters.

TWEWY Was an over rated POS. I hate the style and the main character. Whiny little emo bitch, I was turned off within 5 minutes because of that main character's persona. I tried playing further in, about an hour cause who knows, it might get better, but I was wrong, and it didn't.

Nothing about the game grabbed me, nothing made me want to keep playing. Nothing made it memorable for me, and the only way the game won't fade out of existance as a decent RPG will be if it gets a sequel. Here's hoping that won't happen.

because most ds owners are children? just wait for gta

those children will buy GTA, and i guess 16+ people also buy the games that are more meant for children

I would really like to see some blood and gore when I'm on a road trip rather than stars and robot toys. But that is totally opinionated, as with this thread and every content within. It's all about preference whether one would accept that or not. Forgive me for being a pacifist, but that's just how I see it.

Everyone else liked it, so hoping it won't get a sequel is a bit selfish. Your words could use some refining because they are likely to start a flame war.

I don't know why I'm putting this in spoiler tags, cause you didn't like the game. The main purpose of the game is to explore the main character. He learns to like people and stop being such an emo at the end. You didn't give the game a chance at all if you only played for an hour.

about 70-80% of ds owners are children without them Nintendo ds would be something like the gba lol

Yeah, that's a fact but I think it's not a very good marketing strategy to base a whole console off it. It's like if the xbox had only halo and it's clones becouse most of the xbox owners are mostly teen/middle age beerdrinking partygamers... oh wait.
So it bothers me that "mostly children have DS's" is starting to become a stereotype. Espceially becouse I think the DS as a console idea is great, it has features no other handheld had before it and that's why I bougth one even thou I knew what to expect from the games.

Are there actually any stats for this? My friends are all between 24-32 and I can think of about 15 of them with a DS, plus three older folk from work who have DSs as well. The only person I know with a PSP is my girlfriend's nephew, who's 14.
