Anyone who's savvy enough with this able to help me? No matter what I do, ePSXe205 is not reading the saves to my games. These games are dumped from my retail discs, and the memory card saves are dumped from my actual PS1 memory cards using uLaunchELF on my PS2. Here is my process so far:

  • With FMCB v1.964 on my PS2, I copy my raw PS1 memory card saves to a flash drive using uLaunchELF 4.43a
  • I use PSXRC to convert the raw files to .mcs format
  • Using PSXGameEdit 1.60, I load all the files from my memory card into the program, and export the memory card into a .gme format
  • In ePSXe, I open Config>Memory Cards and load my .gme file as Memory Card 1
  • In ePSXe, I select File>Run BIOS, and while in the BIOS, I choose MEMORY CARD to verify that my save is there
  • I open the game of my choice only to see that there are no saves that the game loads or recognizes

This is the case for every game I've tried, on both PS1 memory cards that I own. My saves work on my real PS2 so it's unlikely they're corrupt or anything. Not sure if there's any rules against sharing save files but upon request I will send any and all files from both of my PS1 Memory Cards

There is no real reason in particular that I want to do this, but the idea of digitally preserving my games as well as my saved data to work in emulators seems neat to me. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know. Thanks :)

you try memory card rex? I can't recall the extension, but I have a tutorial on getting raw saves to work on the ps3. iirc, that's the program I use.

Just did while exploring possible alternatives. My belief is that these files needed to be saved as .mcr, which the other program I used didn't support that as a save extension. MemcardRex fortunately seems to, and all my saves seem to load ok in it, but in ePSXe I am greeted to nothing again

This was an interesting question, so I went ahead and tried. It's far more simpler than you think:

1) Copy your saves from your PS1 memory card to a usb (raw format)
2) Download and open the program MemcardRex 0.8
3) Once there, import a raw save (with the second icon from the right)
4) Save as mcr format

Tried with a Spyro 2 save and it worked.

Who knew that all it would take would be different program and different import method to do it. Tried it on my FFVII save and it worked right away. Used MemcardRex 1.6 but I imagine it would work well on any version of the program. Needless to say thank you for saving me from any future headaches, I appreciate the help

I didn't know that that would make a difference. I believe I uploaded the memory card rex that I used for the ps3, but I don't remember which version it is. I assume the same version works for both the emulator and the ps3.

There's an import raw option in the program, so my guess is that it looks for something specific with the file, since I couldn't even get the program to find the file unless I renamed it to what it was when I extracted it with uLaunchELF

Speaking of the PS3, if I wanted to say, convert these saves into the necessary PS3 format, I could then transfer them over to my PSP or Vita, correct? I seem to remember a transfer option to that extent on the PS3. I've also heard of CWCheat on the PSP working to just load a .mcr file which I'm gonna try also, but just curious

I actually copied my Spyro 3 save from the PS3 to epsx. Just follow the same procedure and you'll be good to go

afaik, yes.

iirc, raw psx saves have SC at the beginning or the end of the file in hex. memory cards themselves are 16 blocks (128KBs) at 8KBs apiece. 15 of these can be used with a 16th being a table of contents.

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
