As the title says - i am getting messages on my N3DS. I have a japanese N3DS,
so I can not read then. Please excuse if this questing is totally idiotic.

On the to screen there are a pair of shoes. The number counts up, and also
the text bubble on the lower screen showed some some message alert after
I opened the N3DS from standby.

Is this harmless, are this system generated messages or what is this.
I am afraid to download a fw update. But all online features are off.

Yeah they are just tutorial messages, you'll get a new one once per day the first few times you boot up your system. Totally normal.

You know, since you have a JN3DS, I would like to suggest you the Google Translate App.

If you have an Android or an IOS smartphone, you can simply download the Google Translate App from here...

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.translate&hl=en

OR

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google-translate/id414706506?mt=8

Once downloaded, you can take a picture of ANY JAPANESE TEXT and let the app scan it, and it will translate on the fly and show you the translated text on your phone :)

This way, you'll know EXACTLY what the 3DS messages say :)

It works REALLY GOOD. Trust me :)

Google Translate, good?
All the times I have tried to translate Japanese, Chinese or similar with it, the translation hasn't made any sense whatsoever. Adding text recognition into that mix is probably just going to make it make even less sense.

I've been using that app for my work since almost a year now. I have to translate Japanese text in photos/fliers/magazines, which cannot be copy pasted.

All I have to do is open the app, click the camera icon, align the Japanese text in the photo/flier/magazine, take a snap, and let it translate.

It might not be 100% accurate but it gives you a fairly good idea of what the text says.

You have to use it to believe it. Just download it, go to any Japanese website, take a pic, scan, and it'll show you :)

You need to understand that languages use different pronunciation, punctuation and the like. Chinese to English and vice versa is very hard to comprehend unless you are fluent in both languages. This is why we see so many funny Chinese to English translation signs (and I'm sure the same for them) from tourists. It's not perfect, but I can usually make sense when words are misplaced or what they may have been trying to say instead.

Here's an example...

I used this website...

Using Google Translate, I aligned the text, took a snapshot, highlighted the text with my finger, it scanned it and showed me the result. Here's a screenshot of the app in action...

Good enough translation to understand what it says :)
