GBAtemp introduces Featured Posts: the triumph of quality over quantity

Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to have to browse a 100+ page forum thread to find relevant information? I'm sure you have. How do you find anything relevant in the nearly 800 page long CEMU thread other than the first post? Until now, this seemed like an impossible task.

But no more! Today, we are proud to introduce Featured Posts, a custom made forum add-on that we believe will help improve the quality of forum content by enabling a simple new feature. From now on, you will be able to mark relevant posts within your own threads to highlight the better content:

By the simple act of clicking this button (which is positioned next to the Like button), you will be able to build a list of posts within your own threads which will remain displayed on the first page below the first post:

Note that you can click the table headers to sort the list by number of likes, by date, or alphabetically. Every time you mark a post as Featured, the author's "Featured Posts" count will be increased by one:

When you look at someone's member card, the number of Featured Posts will be a good indicator of the quality of the content produced by this person. In addition to encouraging quality over quantity, we are convinced that this add-on will be used in a variety of manners, such as:
• Pointing out new release posts in a homebrew/translation/romhack/emulator project thread
• Marking a post as 'best answer' to a question
• Highlighting useful contributions in general
And much more... it is up to you now.

In order to prevent abuse, we have disabled this feature in the EOF and the introductions area. Moderators also have a 'Clear' button that will clear the entire list of Featured Posts in a thread if necessary. Please keep in mind that you shouldn't use this feature in opinion/debate threads to designate posts that best match your own opinion. Moreover, while you are able to mark your own posts as 'Featured' within your own threads, make sure you do this wisely and only when relevant. We will be on the lookout for abuse but if something slips past us, don't hesitate to report anything suspicious.

Thank you for being part of our community!
The staff @ GBAtemp

SO if i understand this correctly, i guess i should see clearly.

  • Featured post allows users to make post stand out more to easily browse for useful information among the millions of other comments that is burried under threads. (3ds noob paradise perfect example)
  • The only person who can mark content as featured is the one who originally created the post (Marked by the "OP" known as original post) and any moderator or staff with moderation ranks or above.
  • Personally is easily comparable to the "Best answer" selector for the ask section except there you only allowed to select one instead of multiple comments.
  • If i find someone abusing this (I guess i would need example or some kind of post be made about this rule and exceptions in the rules section) Is optional to report that? Do we report the person who marked it as featured or the post itself?
If there is something i misunderstand, please kindly correct me about it. I just got back from a week of no online service and i'm trying to find out what i missed so rushing i may overlooked somethings, still cleaning out my alerts. :ninja:

report the post, or else we will have to search which one is abused to un-feature it.
if there are a lot of reports from the same user we will notice it.
unless ALL the featured posts for that user are abused/trolled, then you can report the user for troll/spam attempt.

Your other points are correct.
You can also add that users can report posts they think should be featured if the OP is not active anymore, a moderator will do it.
Maybe we will make a different report button later, like "suggest as featured post", as currently, all reports are on the same moderation queue, both wrong posts and good/featured suggestions.
We took note of all the suggestion from the users in this thread, some of them are good ideas.

...removing post count in user's profile.
Good suggestion. I would remove post count in the user infobox on the left side and leave it in profile.
Why not remove the ability to feature own posts? The most helpful thing is to update the OP and then post "OP updated."

When I write a guide, I usually add the date near the top (see Loadiine GX or Nintendont thread) and tell which version the guide is based of.
There's always the "last edited on ... by ..." at the bottom of a thread, but that's:
1) not visible or well known by users
2) not always representative to the (up-to-dateness? that word actually exist?) of the guide. the OP could edit a spelling mistake on an old guide and keep it outdated.

I agree we would need a way to mark OP'd guides as "still up to date" or "reviewed on ... and still working" even if it's written 5 years ago.
and automatically mark old tutorial as old, with a warning that it's probably not advised to follow it without asking for help or searching if there's a newer guide.
not all first post can become obsolete, so it would require a thread's option to set a time limit when writing it until it's automatically marked as old/require review.

I do understand why that might be desirable, but there are legitimate reasons to feature one's own post. If you solve your own problem, you might want to feature your post to highlight the solution. Also, for developers having the ability to feature later posts which include important information can be very useful.

To previous post above this one.

That comment was rather unnecessary, so i dunno why you did it. I would only assume you tried to correct me for no real reason. "Post" It is a post, See the "OP" It stands for Original Post. If it was THREAD which you so claim, it would be "OT" not "OP" by the way people hedre have been known to use both of these words to describe the same thing and you obviously knew what i was talking about.

Also correct me if i am wrong but isn't ONE WORD COMMENTING against rules?

Should I be allowed to feature my own posts? I saw the "Feature Post" button and had no idea what it was so I marked my own post as featured. So then I looked it up and found this.

No you can't feature your own post. Cause is supposed to be a way to point out what is considered notable worthy, if it was like that where you feature your own post it would be bad, disaster, used irresposibly.

You can only feature other post in topic posts you create.

Yes, you can feature your own posts, if you think they deserve to be noticed by other users.
Mashers explained few post ago why it's possible and how you could find it useful : you found your answer and want to let other users know about it, or you are a dev and release a new version of your program, etc.
