MP3 playback through any GBA conversion software is pretty dreadful. The Play-Yan is a possible solution and I'm guessing the MP3 player cart Nintendo released in Europe isn't any different so that might be worth a look.
I myself have a 20GB Sony Walkman I picked up for next to nothing though most of the time I just use the MP3 player on my w800i cell phone. Nothing extra to carry around, phone has a decent loud speaker, built in FM radio, I can swap songs with friends via bluetooth, the sound quality is excellent... not to mention it plays games, can browse the net, takes pics, plays vids and more!
So yeah I'd say get a music phone if you want to get something that can do more than just music, there are some great handsets out there... and they're fairly cheap nowadays, if not then pick up a cheap MP3 player. By all means get a GBA if you don't have one already, there are some great games out there but, but spend what you would on a Play-Yan on an mp3 player or phone or something instead!
