I probably wont say much after this for fear of turning this into a full on Pokemon thread but SM is what happens if you make Black but do it badly.
Black is easily one of the worst games in the series, forcing you to suffer through the way too intricate and confusing story in a game meant for children.

It over explains though, so children can understand it.

I didn't really think that It over explained stuff. Then again, I was about 12 when that game came out, so I was the target audience at the time...

Now, it did hold your hand a ton, but it was still pretty challenging without being frustratingly difficult. S&M on the other hand were just so asy to the point that it just walked you through the story and then kicked you off after the post game with little to do (in terms of extra daily events).

Black (& white) were my favorite titles in the ds series due to how lively it felt (even after you were done), However, the most recent 3ds main pair seemed to lose that lively feeling after you completed the game.

(On Topic)I'd recommend Lego Marvel's Avengers (Age of Ultron?). After you complete a bit of the story, the open world aspect opens up with a lot of things to explore, with vehicles you can ride, and tons of missions*!

*characters required for said missions vary, some can help unlock others, but rarely.

Do Dragon Quest VII/VIII, SMT IV:A, 7th Dragon:Code VFD, Cave Story, Dragon Ball Fusions, River City Tokyo Rumble, or Steam World Dig count?

Maybe even Link Between Worlds?
Almost none of those could be considered open world games.
