It's a very old homebrew that most likely hardcodes the requirement for a specific IOS to be patched (with trucha, es_identify, flash access, ...) (probably 36 or 249 but don't remember anymore)

If you just want a file-level nand backup, you can use ShowMiiNAND to extract a block-level (bootmii) backup

maybe your HBC is outdated, or not using IOS58 ?
could you check ?

launch HBC, press Home button, and look at the top right.
it should tell you the version, and which IOS it's using.

a lot of homebrew expect that HBC is running on IOS58, and is at least v1.1.0 for AHB access tag.

if not, you'll have to verify if you already have IOS58. If not, install it. (not the latest, but good enough)
then reinstall latest version of HBC to force it to use IOS58.
then HBC will grant homebrew the proper access rights.

then, be sure you have at least HBC 1.1.0 (you didn't report your version)
and be sure you have the meta.xml file with your boot.dol, the meta.xml contains specific direction for the HBC (how to load the boot.dol, which option to enable, which arguments to use, etc.)
like greywolf said, be sure you have <ahb_access/> tag somewhere in your meta.xml or else you won't have the necessary access right to read the NAND.
