Hacking Fresh wii to mod. Update or mod then update?

I have a fresh wii to softmod and im curious what is the most recommended way to go about this. I tried searching but didnt find a good answer. Should i just update the wii to 4.3 and use the letterbomb or should i just use my copy a brawl, softmod, and then manually update the IOS info?

If you're already on 4.X, there isn't really a need to update. You may need to manually install certain IOSs though.

Use ModMii and tell it what version your Wii is on. It will install/update all the necessary files without you having to run an official update, and ModMii will give you easy-to-follow instructions specific to your Wii.

Alternatively, you can update to 4.3 through an official update if you want, but there's no real reason to add this step since the result will be the same using ModMii, and I would still recommend using ModMii afterwards to softmod your Wii.
