Hardware formatting hdd

when i try to format my hard drive i get windows is unable to format, does somebody know why? it does have a old version of windows vista on it.
 
Solution
It would be helpful if you'd tell us about your partitioning.

So I just assume you have one partition and trying to format your partition from within windows. Windows will not do that.

Insert a Windows DVD and boot from it. At the beginning of the setup, you'll be able to format all partitions (of course, any partition manager or linux boot cd/dvd is able to do that, too).

Remember, you'll lose EVERYTHING that is saved on that partition.
