It does inject bricking code? I don't care how often it happens or how long before it triggers, I want NO brick code.

Actually it's a check to see whether the cart is a genuine Gateway flashcart. So far there haven't been any false positives after the initial beta introduction of it. Also you need FW 4.x to use the 3DS mode flashcarts in any case.

First of all, cutting the trace is old news, you don't have to do that on the new rev D R4i carts. And Gateway is primarily for 3DS roms, where R4i is DS mode only. R4i works with the 7.2 firmware just fine.

i think the OP need to clarify what he is wanting to do

play 3DS games or NDS games

if you intend to play 3DS roms you need a 3ds on 4.5 or lower

if you want to just play NDS games, none of the bricking news relates to NDS flash carts

no point getting info on things that will have no relevance to you

If I get an R4i gold, will it brick the device? I heard something about cutting the signal line in the flashcart to make it "support" the latest version of the kernel but it really blows the flashcarts fuse.

And is an a r4 better than gateway?

Can't compare R4i gold and Gateway 3ds, though both of them can work on 3DS,
but they are totally different type flashcarts:
Gateway 3ds used to play 3DS roms base on v4.1-v4.5 system;
R4i gold 3ds used to play NDS roms, work on all 3DS system till now
