I've been known to throw blue shells, kill Redeads, rescue princesses, run faster than the speed of sound, spin and break boxes, suck every food and enemies, catch every creature known to man using ballz, pay my house debt to the most evil tanuki ever, beat and smash everyone in my way, repeatedly save the world from an evil organization, making lines using letter shaped blocks, when I'm depressed. XD

This also goes to show the power that the medium can have on people
I mean i did cry at the ending of FF9.

I'd also like to make a side note that video games aren't really a way to deal with issues, it's just more of a way to unwind.
I think that nails it. Im not sure i agree with everything in there but i can see that it is a step in the right direction.

this is no reason for not doing your homework. it does help but an overdose of games is not great either.

the question is, what level of depression can it help reduce? sometimes the effect is temporary. it can relieve stress but depression? doesnt that become another alcohol?

When I suffered a horrible case of depression, one of the main key ingredients to my recovery was Super Mario Galaxy 2. Thus, I know that videogames can work to fight depression, especially if made to battle it directly (like referenced in the first post.)

Not surprisingly, two other games also helped me recovered (Though not as much as SMG2) . These games were Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 and Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES. I ended up reflecting upon almost every piece of text in the games, trying to find the meta-significance of it all and its relationship to real life.

Basically, video games are awesome at fighting depression.

One of my favorite stress-busters back in college was Counter-Strike, setting up bots and flying solo. No nonsense about nobody, no dealing with bullshit from team mates (or people in general), just mindless shooting.

When I get the urge to kill, I shoot stuff.

Eh? We need specific ganes for this? Video Games have always helped me out during bad times, nothing like a quick run around a town in Animal Crossing to cheer you up after a long day or blasting a few heads off in TF2 after a bad argument. The question is, why do they seem to just be figuring this out now >_>

Blasting heads off...in TF2? What game are you playing (well unless you're a sniper)?

Yeah, I was talking about Sniper but Demo and Solider can also blast heads off (but they also blow up everything along with that >_>)
