Since everything under 2GB should be formatted to FAT 16, does that mean that if I get a 2GB Kingston I should format it to FAT 32 since it's not under 2GB?

everything upto (and including) 4gb should be formatted to fat16 with 64k cluster size.

Winxp doesn't let you do this under the gui but drop to the cli and type:

"FORMAT X: /FS:FAT /X /Q"

where X: is the drive you want to format.

I thought FAT32 was more versatile re:filenames and more space efficient?

Is FAT16 only better re:speed?

fat32 is more space efficient, fat16 is faster.

Formatting a 4gig memstick to fat32 would prolly save 15meg or so over fat16 but would be a lot slower.

I've tried both FAT16 and FAT32 on my 1gig cards and the difference isn't at all noticeable (using JPN Kingston SD Cards).

I have all mine at FAT32, now.

Ok. Thanx for the info. I don't notice any speed issues as is (currently FAT32) so I'll stick with the space saving (only a 2Gb card).

Cheers

The difference is definitely noticable using an R4 with kingston jap/toshiba memory cards. Especially on that tony hill downhill jam game. Other carts probably use better access than the R4.
