Well we've got this crappy meter where you've gotta top up how much electricity you've got (think, a mobile phone), which broke... So we've had the British Gas electricity man around. He fixed it, but noticed that the rate at which our electricity was being used was overpriced.
How much overpriced?
Well... The normal rate is 86p a week.
We were being charged F***ING £16 A WEEK!
Sorry, needed to vent.
British Gas SUCK.

lol that's some overprice on a standing charge.

It's Transco you should hate though, they maintain the meters and pipelines for all the gas providers - and they do indeed suck.

Oh. How long have you guys been paying 16E?
It never dawned on you guys that you were paying way more than your friends, relatives, neighbors, etc?
Or it just never occurred to you to even ask what others were paying?

Also, whats a "p" mean--pound?

It means pence, think like pennies but for pounds, 1/100 of a pound. Pounds are worth about $1.50 now.

£1 = 100p (pence)
As $1 = 100¢ (I think)
We live in a little village so friends and relatives don't live here. Haven't asked neighbours, 'cause we thought it was the norm.
Think how p***ed off you would be, paying $16 for something worth 86¢

Oh I know I'd be mad alright. We experienced severe problems like that when we were in Africa. They charged us exuberant prices for our utilities and nearly broke us. It started out a normal enough price but every month it went up a bit, and then a lot and my aunt asked the others how they kept up. We were being charged as much as 5x what others were paying and we went up there several times and complained more than once, we had our power shut off for a few weeks more than once and they still charged us.

We still had to pay though, because the landlord would come by and say he'd evict us if we didn't pay the bill. It was one of the reasons we couldn't stay longer than we did--it was more expensive living there--paying about 600$ bucks for our electric bill--it was just lights. We didnt have AC or anything. and a couple more for water.

We dont pay that much in the US for our electricity and water, and that was 10 years ago.

86pence a week sounds like it's the adjustment because you've paid too much. Most electric bills are £30 - £100 a month depending on size of house and use, of course. Your bill will go up again once you've levelled out. Maybe sooner than you realise if you've had a cheque for £80.

Well the 86p is a base fee (we get no electricity for paying that) that BG charge for supplying it, we still have to pay ON TOP of that, all electricity we use.

The base fee was £16 a week, now it's 86p (+ the top ups)
