Every open source software also can be treated as freeware, but not every freeware can be treated as open source software. This is a thread about freeware and therefore it can includes both.
Beside that get along with the fact that everyone expect you GNU evangelist calls it open source and not freeware ;)

Obviously this thread is about free for use (free for the end user to use). Most users don't give a shit about whether or not the software is open source or not as long as it work. And GNU is really a flawed idea, it puts philosophy over practicality and still runs into the occasional problem.
