ESP32-S31 - will be released soon

ESP32-S31 delivers comprehensive wireless connectivity by combining Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) in 2.4 GHz band, Bluetooth 5.4 with both Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) and Classic (BR/EDR) support, plus an IEEE 802.15.4 radio enabling Thread and Zigbee protocols for diverse IoT applications. ESP32-S31 will provide a seamless support for Matter protocol over Wi-Fi as well as Thread radio.

Wi-Fi 6 brings enhanced transmission efficiency and reduced power consumption for battery-powered devices. Bluetooth 5.4 adds LE Audio for high-quality wireless audio streaming, direction finding for precise location services, and Bluetooth Mesh 1.1 for scalable device communications, while Classic (BR/EDR) ensures compatibility with legacy audio devices and low-latency, high-throughput applications.

Also, the integrated 1000 Mbps Ethernet MAC, provides high-bandwidth wired connectivity for IoT applications.

For people that use hearing aids or bluetooth earbuds this is going to be great, range is vastly increased so no dropouts, battey will last all day, you can share the audio so say you are watching a movie on the tv or tablet you can connect mutiple users at the same time to the same source. Personally for me I will make an esp32-s31 dongle for my older speakers, then I'll put a small amp with 3.5mm jack which can connect to an amp in the speakers and give them the new superior bluetooth version. Also I'll add a touchscreen and add internet radio. I will probably also add a gpio for use as a smart plug device to turn the speakers on and off with the same esp32-s31

For my old phone that doesn't have this I should be able to make or buy a usbc adapter like these:
  • Oticon Easy LE Adapter: Specialized for connecting hearing aids and personal audio devices via USB-C to phones/tablets.
  • Bewinner USB-C Bluetooth 5.4 Adapter: Supports aptX Adaptive/HD for high-quality audio streaming.
  • Eppfun AK3040Pro MAX: Offers Bluetooth 5.4 with LE Audio for phones, consoles, and laptops.
  • CREATIVE BT-W6: Bluetooth 5.4 transmitter supporting aptX Lossless and LE Audio.
Has anyone else heard about this new esp32 version, if so what are you going to use it for?

I'll get a couple. They'll go nicely to the drawer where the older ESP32 siblings are.
And then remain unused for years. 😏

I've got quite a few variants in drawers, they always come in handy when you leaast expect it though. You can use them for making smart sockets to use with home assistant, that's what usually ends up happening to my spare ones.

Oh... I would love to know how to create a smart socket, indeed. Got a tutorial handy?

I have a project ongoing (a soundbar) but have some power issues, as I hear a thud-thud-thud when all is plugged it.

But a smart socket is amazingly interesting, as they are quite expensive.

i am semi excited.
i still love the classic s3, with its xtensa architecture.
but if you ask "why" i couldn't answer :D
the connectivity options on the new one are great, although i am surprised: no BT6, no 5 Ghz Wifi.
If i am not mistaken both of these features are already available on other ESP32 variants

If you want to make your own firmware I don't have a tutorial, then if you don't there's tasmota which supports matter https://tasmota.github.io/docs/ESP32/ or esphome.

You still need to power the eps32 but you can buy pre made boards from ali express to convert 240v/120v to 5v/3.3v for the esp32. You can use a diode and relay or mosfets but if you've no idea about this, then you can following a tutorial like this;

I'm looking forward to playing with the bluetooth on it as I'll be able to use it for audio. I'm going to build a touchscreen for my old speakers and add internet radio and bluetooth to them. Maybe even add a mic and some addressable leds to it as well so it's reactive to the music. The ESP32-S3 is my favourite esp32 version, and this new version coming out has the stuff I've been wishing for. Can't wait until it's released.
