my sons 3ds is used mostly for playing games off the gateway card. is there any advantage to putting emunand on it? what are the advantages?

Another reason is to help prevent "accidental" updating. You can fully update the emuNAND without loosing the the exploitable firmware.

ive bought a sandisk extreme uhs 16gb sdhc for the 3ds. do faster cards boot emunand faster?

I don't think there is research about boot speed regarding emunand. You should be okay with the one that came with your 3ds, the booting speed is not terribly slow

Class matters more than brand when it comes to speed on SD/MicroSD cards. The file size being what it is for the launcher, however, I don't think any card is going to make a difference in the boot speed of emuNAND. Not a noticeable difference, in any case. It's the 3DS' processor that is holding up the system for those few seconds.

just thought a faster sdhc might boot the emunand partition faster, 20s or so is a long time for a 5 year old. without emunand it obviously a lot quicker than emunand as its only reading the launcher.

I have no interest in estore or online stuff. Never setup WiFi on my 3ds so no worry about updates. As long as all the games work I'm happy without it.

A few of us did a few stopwatch benchmarks in mid December (on 2.0b1) and there were measurable (magnitude single digit seconds) yet insignificant (5%ish) differences in boottime between class 4 and class 10.

edit: found the posts in question: http://gbatemp.net/threads/3ds-flas...nd-support-thread.357776/page-61#post-4867762 ff.

But as faster cards aren't that much more expensive nowadays and one can always use them for other applications when we won't be using our 3DSes anymore: go for a fast one on a new purchase, use your old one else.

Just keep in mind that at least the Pokemon update (which requires eshop access) fixes a game breaking bug, don't know for sure about the Mario&Luigi Dreamteam update.

This bug can be easily avoided as long as he doesn't save in Lumiose City. Retrievil, if you're playing Pokémon X/Y and are not going to be downloading the update, just make sure that if you absolutely must save in Lumiose City, that you do it inside of a building. It's when you save outside of buildings within Lumiose that the bug presents itself.

I agree with this. Even if you don't care about online at all, Retrievil, it's worth going online and visiting the e-shop at least once, just to grab the patches for games you're playing. Also, I don't know if you're interested in the Layton games, but you can grab 365 free puzzles for the Miracle mask game, and the Azran game is also offering daily puzzles for a year (it's already up to puzzle #40 or 50).

Well I finished Dream Team without running in to any bugs. Pokemon, I don't play (tragic I know).

The extra content sounds good though. Guess I will do it at some point in the future.

I disagree. I had toshiba 8 GB class 4 GB SDHC. Prior to, I had the stock Sandisk 2 GB class 4 (presumably card). I am now on a MicroSDHC + SD converter Class 4 Sony 32 GB card. Though all were the same class, loading times were significantly different. The original 2GB card had fair loading times, taking up to a few seconds 5-7 at times). While that may sound bad, the Toshiba class 4 I was using had horrendeous load times (8-24 seconds of load times, it was unbearable). Lastly, the card I have now, the 32 GB Sony Class 4--load times are amazing. It takes two to three seconds, tops, and all the data from eShop loads almost instantly.

All of the cards were formatted in FAT32, same conditions, and all had negligible amounts of use. By far, Sony has given me fantastic results. Sandisk was arguably in the same ballpark, but Toshiba, hands down, was the worst.
