Hi everyone,
I have a PS5 EDM-033 on my bench. The console arrived in very poor condition after a failed attempt to replace the HDMI port. Initially, the console would power on but showed no image, with a white LED.

I replaced the HDMI port and repaired all the damaged traces. At that point, the console boots and displays correctly, but once it reaches the main menu, it shuts down. On the next boot, it only allows system reinstallation, which always fails at 40%.

Using a microscope, I found that one of the SSD NAND chips (fortunately one of the replaceable ones) had a cracked corner. I replaced it, and now the formatting process no longer stops at 40%, but instead gets stuck at 99%. ( CE-100006-7)

I replaced the original SSD NAND (K9BKGD8J1A) with an identical one taken from an EDM-020. The only difference between the two NANDs is the SEC code: 234 vs 037.

I also replaced the SSD controller, but the issue still persists.

I’d like to ask those of you with more experience: what else should I check?
Would it make sense to replace all three replaceable NAND modules? Or should I try reballing the other three?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

If it’s getting stuck at 99% after a NAND swap, it usually means mismatch or issue with the remaining NANDs. These SSD modules work together, so mixing chips from different boards can cause problems even if they’re the same model. I’d check the other NANDs first and try reballing them before replacing everything. If one was physically damaged, there’s a good chance others have issues too.

I replaced the three replaceable modules; the other three are “married” to the rest of the motherboard configuration, so I removed them and re-balled them. I also replaced the SSD controller, but I still get exactly the same problem: it gets stuck at 99% during formatting.

The strange thing is that, with the old cracked SSD NAND, the console booted normally (although it was very slow), then it shut down and from that point this problem started. The NANDs I replaced should be widely compatible; however, if I try replacing them even with a different revision, the console does not boot at all.
