you can safely use +r, but as stated depends on the brand, which is also true for -r. i have some wii games burnt on +r, most are -r, all my gc games are +r - both work fine
 
If your burner is able to, setting the book type for DVD-R to DVD-ROM could improve the compatibility. (using Nero tools for example)
 
i used verbatime dvd+r once (they ran well), bought the same again when they got empty and i got disc-error! donno why

so i think good dvd-rs are the better choice. now i use sony dvd-r (had no problem with them

That's a general problem.
If you buy another charge of media (another pack) chances are they have completely different write set up and write information. So to be exact you might have to check any new package of media with your burner and different write settings to get optimal results!
