So how does this work? ...... You have a .avi video and you change the extension .avi to .mkv. Does that work?
I don't really get it
I'm not sure if there is an easier way to explain it but here goes.....
Try to think of Video Files as 'containers' - one container has the label of 'AVI' on it & the other has 'MKV' label on it & each type of container can only hold one type of item.
So as an example in a 'real life situation' - if these containers were oil drums with labels on them, then one drum can only contain Petrol & the other Diesel - but you couldn't put both into one drum
- Lets say your car is a Petrol car - you would then use the drum with the label of 'Petrol' on it to get it to run
Now, what if someone swapped the labels on the Drums around ( Petrol Diesel ) - what would happen then ???
You would then end up putting Diesel into a Petrol car - & although your car 'may' start, it will eventually 'conk out' 'cos it can't handle the type of fuel put into it (the process of burning Diesel is different from the process of burning Petrol)
This is what simplistically what you are trying to do with changing file extensions around -
A program will look @ the file extension (the label of the Drum) then use certain code (the engine fuel burning process for the type of fuel) to display the contents (or run the 'engine'), but if the contents are of the wrong type (i.e Diesel instead of Petrol) then something is bound to go wrong
I really hope you can understand that !!!!
it sounded good when I was writting
