the xl has two positions for the hinge, one fully open like every other ds, and one position half way. if you would ever want to use it sitting flat on a table for some games that could work well like that, then the xl is the way to go

original has only two positions, fully open and fully closed. depending on your hinges it might be able to hold itself up half way, but the xl has actual clicks to keep the screen in place in the half way position

Dimension-wise, I recently found out that DSi XL is roughly the same size, folded, as a regular iPhone Pro Max. If you have bigger hands it's a welcome addition and for today's standards it's not even larger than a smartphone.
Another cool feature all Nintendo DSi XL models share over their regular DSi counterparts is IPS displays, so if deeper blacks and more vibrant colours/viewing angles are important to you, go with the XL.

DSi XL won't have blurry pixels because the screen resolution is 1:1. If you want big displays to play DS games on, it's going to be a superior option to any 3ds, where you either need to use blurry scaliing, or shrink the displays to be 1:1 pixel mapped.

I see DSI xl has bigger, more visible pixels. The question, is it a nuisance when playing?

I recently played on my DS lite and got the impression that the screen should be bigger. And now the question is, screen in DSI (normal) be ok because it is a little bigger than in the DSlite, or is the difference between them hardly visible?

You will notice the bigger pixels and probably the gaps between them, but it shouldn't be that distracting. Best thing you can do is see if someone has one, plop in a game or your flashcart, and see how you like it if you're unsure. Not having to scale the image on your display should make it look incredibly clear and sharp.

You're STILL deciding? :wtf:

Finding a good condition DSi XL is the hard part. There is a major screen lottery you have to factor in.

Main issues:

1. Yellowing. Don’t buy a used model from Japan, or any other humid region. The screens will more than likely be destroyed.

2. Vignetting. The screens develop vignetting for unknown reasons. It could be from overuse, or no use at all.

3. Dimmer Top Screen. It’s common to find these models where the top screen is significantly dimmer than the bottom. It’s very distracting.

4. Mismatched display color temperatures. In conjunction to mismatched brightness levels, the screens can be opposite color temperatures. Again, not ideal.

5. Dim screens due to age. It’s common to find that both DSi XL screens tend to wear over time. Both screens become noticeably dimmer due to age, but the top tends to go quicker.

To get the best experience, you’re going to want to find a model without these issues. Ideally, you want one with matching neutral color temperatures, if not more warm. The cooler (blueish) temperature screens do look a bit brighter, but they are also much harsher and less pleasing and accurate to me. You also want to find one that is barely used to maximize the brightness.

I have found such a model, and it was open-box condition. If you can find it, the difference is not even close. It’s the best screen on any Nintendo console outside of the Switch OLED. A true enthusiast display.

Your best bet, is to buy one brand new, or open-box condition. Check the screens, and buy junk models online and swap the screens if needed. Ideally the top-screen should have the brightness and color temperature you want. That being the most fragile to these issues, and the hardest to repair.

The only thing I will say, using anything but a good example DSi XL is a direct downgrade to the picture quality. DS Lite and 3DS not excluded, the latter being the worst option.

@Exnor

Can you take photo of the two consoles side by side with the menu shown?

Here's a photo of one of mine DSiXL:

@Exnor thank you. Do you agree with words that is much better play on XL than original Dsi?

Yes much better. The only downsize imo is that the XL is a little more heavy.

But the screens are bigger and the battery last longer, plus if you like those drawing games, the bigger screen is a must have.

And I can say the same about the N3DSXL. Way better experience than on the smaller screens.

I played on original 3DS and new3DSxl. My feeling are diffrent than yours. Bigger screen dazzled my eyes with blur and pixels in New Mario 2 and several other 3DS games.

Are you sure you understand what the word "blur" means?

I don't recommend the DS family of systems because they easily break and the screen are fragile and are susceptible to vignetting unlike the modern screens. I know the DS family has great screens for DS games but the hassle ain't worth it tbh. I have both DS Lite and a near mint DSi XL kept in a box. I recommend to go over the 3DS instead or the OG 3DS which has better build quality.
Dsi hinges are strong. Unlike Ds lite ones.
Dsi XL sound is louder than Dsi because only one hole in Dsi speakers(speakers are the same on both models).
Dsi has two hinge positions.

Test dpad from Dsi and Dsi XL. Both have problems with diagonals because of use. But it can be solved.

It’s not hard to guess which is which. Playing DS games on 3DS is a significant downgrade.
