Before you pre-order think again:

First up came a question regarding region locks on the Nintendo DSi handhelds. And Reggie's answer? "To be honest I dont know for sure, I will look into it." He added that he thinks that the device will be region locked, purely on the fact that the downloads for the system are region based.

Another question was a simple one: The DSi can play music, so can it play MP3s? And the answer is "no, it plays the AAC format. It's an easy conversion."

Games? Probably not.
Downloadable content? Most likely region specific and bound to the DS via certificate ala Wiiware but probably will be hacked.
Firmware updates? Most likely region locked.

Exactly.. you can't lock games.. that would screw up the compatibility with the DSL/DSi in a lot of games

Downloadable content obviously, cause I doubt you will be able to access stores from other regions.. like the Wii store

I really hope that SD slot isn't Japan only. If flashcarts don't work, then chances are someone can make an exploit to load games off of the SD Card instead.

I think the online portions are region locked and the main DS functionality region free I hope.

Probably. No one knows for sure, but that's what it looks like.

I mean.....what would happen if I buy a Nintendo wii in japan and after I bring it to the Usa or Europe?

I think yes....so with the DSi will be the same......this for what concerns on-line functionalities....
BUT for games it will be regionfree.....otherwise there will be a huge incompatibility with a lot of DS games.....

No no, that's mistaken.
The actual DOWNLOADING is Japan only, the SD slot will be on all region models.
And by that, they mean a japanese DSi will download japanese software only.

I mean, you need a way to put music and photos on the system.

Uhm...there have been to date no handhelds that have been region-locked, right?

The PSP was partially region-locked, at the discretion of the developers.

I think I'm going to wait until March (providing they aren't sold out as usual for Nintendo), I suspect they will be region locked. There is a list of import retailers selling DSi preorders here
