Whoa, a lot of you seem pretty steamed. A simple "No, the DSi will not be capable of better emulation than the DS Lite." would have sufficed.

@kikuchiyo
I wish my toenail clippings could turn into a penguin army that would do my bidding. That would be awesome.

I don't need a DSi to know this. We already have everything the DSi has that makes a difference in emulation if you have the expansion pak. The new features of the DSi - cameras, mp3 player, sd slot - don't magically make it able to run emulators the DS can't. An N64 emulator could care less if there's a camera.

I do think the the SD slot has some possibilities of hacks to run stuff directly from it, for instance gba games if they offer those as downloads. But that's not really an increase in potential, as the DS can already play gba games. It would just make it easier to do since you wouldn't need a slot 2, and it wouldn't be emulation in the first place since they would run native.

Yes you do actually.??I am not arguing up (to an N64 level of emulation which is a total red herring), as it were, I am arguing down. You seem to have willfully ignored the part of the comment where I said the DSi is basically a DSL. The variable is the Internet connection and the firmware. If the firmware makes it hard to install homebrew, run homebrew, or use ROM images, than the emulation potential of the DSi is nil. If every time you connect to the Internet or the store, and the servers check your firmware, homebrew becomes harder. If every game has a copy of the latest firmware it installs, homebrew becomes harder.

You can't know this unless you have a DSi or know the firmware. So, you have one, you wrote the firmware, or you don't know. Which is it?

The fact is we don't know. If the DSi is going to be as locked down in every respect, like a few of the details we do know suggest it maybe, the emulation potential of the machine is slim to none. Look at the PS3.

@kikuchiyo: Fair point, but firmware updates haven't stopped the wii scene at all.The twilight hack was disabled for like, a week with 3.3 and then they found a way around it. Everything Nintendo has ever done to block piracy has been defeated in one fashion or another.

I'll certainly agree in the beginning that it might be "locked down" as you put it, but just like well, everything else (neglecting ps3, but I personally think that's more of a motivation issue with blu ray being so expensive thing...but, that's neither here near there) it will be broken eventually. So even if Nintendo manages to disable flashcarts and homebrew for a bit, ultimately, it's going to happen. In which case, it will be same stuff we have now, plus maybe some stuff with the sd slot. Which was the point.

That said, I'm ready to admit that this getting out of hand and call a cease fire

The only thing we know for sure is that the DSi can run an internet browser without extra RAM, which means it has it built in. while the DSi may (and I stress the may) come with a better processor for DSi exclusives, I highly doubt it. My personal opinion (purely speculation) is that the DSi will have almost no emulation advantage over the DSL.

And, as I said above, I agreed in the beginning it would most likely be locked down. That's not really surprising, I would do the same thing. But I also have total faith that it's just a matter of time before somebody finds a way around it, also like I said above.

Edit: Look, I was right! (see, I can do it too)

It's going to be very impossible to emulate the DSi. One reason is because of the camera for certain DSi games since you can't use it. So is it impossible to emulate the DSi?

There might ba a way to use webcams instead of DSi's camera (if you're talking about emulating DSi)

However, we know almost nothing about NDSi right now, and YASU said he's not posting the code of how he hacked that DSi, and I'm sure I read somewhere that what he did was exploiting save exploits, which is not a long-term solution, a simple firmware update can crush it to pieces

Well, I'm no expert so I better shut my mouth now

The DSi has a little bit more ram so it would be possible to do certain things the DS and DS Lite wouldn't be capable of without the ram expansion pack. The firmware at first will probably brick the system but after we find a way around it it will allow homebrew developers to add so new features. Also new games could include features that would have to load into ram first so the extra ram could be used after all. I think that about clears things up.
